Job interview

So I have an interview tomorrow and even though its for a pt position thats supposed to be temporary but im not sure how temp exactly im still nervous and wondering if I should really go through with it we need the extra money but im not aure how to approach the interview should I just tell them up front or what advice please

Re: Job interview

  • I have the same problem. I have a very obvious bump. So interviewers will automatically know I'm pregnant if the interview is in person. However, last week, I had 2 interviews over the phone. I chose not to mention the pregnancy at those interviews.
    Here's the deal.....
Legally, you're not required to tell them you're pregnant.
Legally, they can't ask you if you're pregnant.

A month ago, I interviewed for a position. I didn't tell them about the pregnancy until the 3rd and final interview. I thought the job was in the bag. They decided not to hire me. There's no way for me to prove that they discriminated against me because I'm pregnant. It would be their word against mine. But it does leave me wondering.

So from now on, I've decided that they don't need to know. It's none of their business anyway until I talk to HR about maternity leave. (If I ever get a job)

  • Yea my bump isnt huge bc im kind of overweight ro begin with I know its not they're business I just feel like im lying or something
  • I felt the same way with the previous job I was interviewing for. That's why I told them at the last interview.
Next time, I won't take the chance. They can find out my personal business when I choose to tell them if they hire me.

  • You're not lying, it's your right not to disclose so they can't discriminate.

  • I went on an interview for a new job when I was 6 months pregnant, so I understand your nerves. However, the others are right: they can't ask, you don't have to tell.

I was nervous about accepting the position (it was full time) once it was offered, without having a conversation about it up front, however. So, when my new boss called and offered it to me I just put it out on the table about how far along I was, and sussed out the situation. She clearly knew (I was huge by then) and had still selected me. So, it totally worked out.

Go, for sure. Worst case scenario is they don't offer it to you.

Yes its not a huge deal if I dont get it and it does make me feel better that its considered a temp job. ..now to find something to wear lol thank you ladies I feel much better.wish me luck! :)
  • One thing to keep in mind is how the company will handle your leave. With dd1 I was hired while pregnant and they decided how much leave I was allowed to take, since obviously I didn't qualify for fmla. They gave me 6 weeks, but they could have just said I could only take my vacation- which would have been like maybe a week then. They told me if I took more I wouldn't be welcomed back, becuse they couldn't bend the rules for
Me, setting a precedent for future ladies. Idk if I could have got medical leave or something? I'm not sure. But if you accept a job and don't get vacation off the bat, you might have to battle taking a leave, even enough to deliver and heal up.
  • I encountered this same issue when i was a new hire i was about 4 months at interview with a bump.. They are not able to discuss ur personal life they are only able to interview you for position.. Once i got the call that i got the job.. I didnt say anything till they gave me an offer then i made manager aware and he told me himself its illegal to discriminate he would have hired me regardless.. Hope this helps.. Good luck.. P.S still at job and currently pregnant and working.. Go on leave in march.. Only down fall.. not eligible for fmla.. But i can go on short term disability..
  • I was interviewing for a massage therapist position around 17 weeks. I wore loose fitting shirts during the interviews. They ended up offering me the position and after I had signed paperwork I let the boss know. They have been great with working with my size and restrictions.
