FTM here and I plan on breastfeeding but I would like for DH to be involved in feedings as well. How long after he is born can I introduce a bottle with breast milk so it doesn't cause any issues with breastfeeding?
We had to supplement with formula (in a bottle) for the first 2 days in the hospital because he had issues with blood sugar and my milk hadn't come in yet. Went home BFing and from Day 3 onwards when I got up to pump in MOTN my DH would give LO a bottle (of BM). He loved being able to feed him and I liked that I just had to get up and pump and then could go right back to sleep.
That said we're still EBF at 4 months, never had any problem with introducing a bottle so early, no nipple confusion etc. And I was def glad for the shared feeding duties.
I have to supplement my 5 week old because my supply is a little low. He takes a bottle and still goes back to the breast. At first we tried the avent natural latch but he sucked them down so fast. I switched to the dr Browns bottles with a premie nipple. He has to work hard to get anything out of the bottle so it has been working well. Hope that helps!
We started at 5-6 weeks just to test it out with how he would do. He ate like a champ. The only time he gets a bottle is if I have to go to an event and can't take him. We've never had any issues with it.
We had to supplement in the hospital. Then when we got home we BF'd only. Today LO is 3 wks and we gave him a bottle of breast milk for the first time. However, I pumped while DH gave him the bottle. I've read in order keep your supply up you need to pump as often as your child eats.
We've been trying since 5 weeks but couldn't find a bottle she would take. We only tried avent and munchkin latch though.. Now at just about 8 weeks she finally took to the Nuk orthodontic bottle, that mimics the shape of the moms nipple when the baby has a good latch (sort of an angled nipple) and ate a good 3.5oz!
