Do you take fish oil?

Hi All,
I am currently 5w1d and have been taking a pre-natal since long before pregnancy.
I have read that fish oil supplements can be beneficial, also, but am not sure about what kind/dose.

Do you take fish oil?  If so, what brand and dose?

Thanks & congrats!

Re: Do you take fish oil?

  • I take it when I remember, so once every two days or so. The recommended dose is two pills per day and I end up taking one pill every two days. Not sure of the dosage amount but it's the Costco brand.

Off to go find and take some fish oil... Thanks for the reminder!

Fish oil is very good to take when pregnant and not pregnant. Do not take fermented fish oil. Make sure your fish oil is made from small fish with no Mercury footprint. I go with Nordic naturals, carlsons, or wild Alaska. I also like my fish oil to have vitamin D3, which is something that people tend to have deficiencies with in the winter. In order for the body the properly use D3 it also needs Omega Fatty acids. DHA is also important for brain development and function. Here is a tip- if you are taking fish oil + D3 combo, it will also contain DHA. You do not need to buy a separate supplement for that. Finally, if you know your Methylation status (whether or not you have any form of MTHFR) fish oil is ESPECIALLY essential for a healthy pregnancy.

Edited to add, taking labs to determine your level of need for fish oil is the most effective way to determine dosage. Otherwise just follow the label.
  • Nope, I'm vegetarian. I was taking ovega-3 which has DHA and EPA both. It's made from the algae where the fish get their omega 3. It was expensive so I stopped but this is a good reminder to start with that again. I take a separate D vitamin at the same time when I'm taking it.

  • Eating eggs, avocados and healthy fats of the like will also give you those benefits
  • I take Nordic Naturals also-they have strawberry extract and smell like strawberries!! They use fish that are checked for Mercury or any chemicals. It helps balance my emotions and dry skin

  • Lurking from May 16... I've been taking fish oil since before I conceived-- now, I'm not saying they are necessarily linked but I had no morning sickness at all. I'm a huge believer in fish oil especially during pregnancy when we have to limit our fish intake due to Mercury
  • I am taking one called "ocean's mother" very important with supplements to take a high quality one. With prenatal I take a raw food one from I believ garden of life and the dha is from the same brand
