Placenta Praevia follow up U/S question

For those of you who have been diagnosed with placenta praevia and already had a follow up ultrasound--how did that go? Was it abdominal, TV, or both? Did you get another chance to see your baby or was it just a quick placenta check?

I'm just curious because I fell down a flight of stairs yesterday (24w1d). My OB's office knows about it but since I don't have any bleeding or decreased fetal movement they said I don't need to be seen until my next regular appointment on the 21st. My follow up ultrasound to check on my placenta is on the 17th. I know it doesn't make a lot of sense because I can feel him in there active as always, but it would certainly make me feel better to see him again. Should I let the ultrasound technician know about the fall or do they even care? Or do you think it would be in my chart already?

Re: Placenta Praevia follow up U/S question

  • I understand where you are coming from because I was in a minor car accident and wanted an u/s just to "see" him as well. I didn't have any bleeding or decreased movement, so my doc said not to worry as well. I think you're OK waiting until the 17th.

That said, I have placenta previa with my first, and when we followed up it was at the growth ultrasound at 28 weeks. It was a full hour long ultrasound to check his growth and measurements AND confirm that the previa had moved. It had.

    Good luck!

  • I was diagnosed with it at my anatomy scan at 18w0d. I was rear ended on the highway at 19w4d coming home from work in a construction zone and went into my obgyn's office the following morning. I got an ultrasound to check the baby and to see if there were any problems with the placenta - fortunately I never had any bleeding. My previa had actually already resolved so that wasn't an issue and baby was fine. Worst feeling ever, though, the tech looked everything over on a private monitor for what seemed like forever before she turned on the regular screen and gave us the everything's ok.

They didn't flinch at offering the ultrasound whatsoever, but your doctor may not be offering one since you have the regular movement and insurance would likely not cover it. At least that's what I'm guessing. I know my medical insurance didn't cover my ultrasound in my doctor's office but would have if I'd gone to the ER and gotten one. Of course, the other guy's auto insurance paid for it since he was totally at fault so it didn't matter.

Are you the one who posted about this in another thread and said you thought you'd broken your pinky, too? I'm bad with usernames unless I've seen them a ton. Anyway, I hope you keep feeling ok and that your previa is gone at your next scan! Your little one's movement staying regular is great! They are very well protected in there, but I understand that you still can't help but worry.
  • I'm sure that at your ultrasound on the 17th the tech will be more than happy to let you take a look at your baby.  In my experience, *most* ultrasound techs understand that it's a very exciting thing to be able to see your baby and are pretty nice about printing out a few pictures, etc.  I have to go for growth ultrasounds in the 3rd trimester and the ladies who do them always insist on turning on the 3d for me and taking a peek around at things.

  • They found that I had it on my 20 week ultrasound by 24 weeks had already moved. Most cases they do move by delivery.Mine was abdominal ultrasound. After 20 weeks mine have been. I get them done twice monthly (other complications).
It's probably not necessary to mention your fall to ultrasound technician unless you feel more comfortable and want to. You're not bleeding and feeling normal movements so sounds like baby is fine. Doctor seems to think so. Try not to get yourself too upset. I've managed to have little falls with all my pregnancies. They are well protected in there.
I always get to see the baby and get pictures with my ultrasounds. I'm sure when you get your next ultrasound you will to.
  • Thanks for the info, everyone. I can find all sorts of information about placenta praevia online but not much about the logistics of the follow up. So I appreciate your insight.

And, yes that was me in the WTF Wednesday thread. Thanks for the well wishes. I'm just glad all I got out of the fall was a broken finger and some bruising. Could have been much worse!
