Unisom?

Hello ladies!
I know we had tons of nausea is a pain in the ass posts, and it's getting old but I'm very puzzled with the whole Unisom thing.

Nurse at the OBGYN recommended 50mg of B6 3times a day + 25mg of Unisom at night. I've been doing the b6 thing but skipped the Unisom because we had none at home and hadn't had the chance to go to the pharmacy. I was still being badly nauseated so off to the pharmacy I went and ask the pharmacist advice because there was 2 different type of molecule (one being Benadryl in the fast release tabs)
The pharmacist was really surprised it has been recommended for morning sickness and went to do some research in the computer. He printed me some studies I had seen about the medication being taken out of the market years ago, despite being use in some country like Canada which I knew (I'm from Quebec but live in the US now).
He ended up saying he definitely doesn't recommend me taking the Unisom. I was feeling guilty and left the Unisom box there and left....
Now I just don't know. Listen to the OB's nurse and stop the stupid vomiting or listen to the pharmacist and be nauseated??? :(

Re: Unisom?

  • I take unisom at night. It will work but it knocks me out!

  • Also screw the pharmacist he is not a dr! The OB office isn't going to prescribe something that could get them sued!

  • I'm surprised the pharmacist didn't realize that what you are being told to take is essentially what makes up Diclegis, which is a class A morning sickness prescription...

  • Diclegis (unisom/b6) is proven to be safe, category A medication. It was taken off the market for a while due to falsified claims that it caused birth defects. It has been extensively studied since then and is now the only FDA approved medication in the US for morning sickness. It is SO. GOOD. I'm a human being again. I can function at work. I highly recommend taking a second look (I believe it's called diclectin in Canada...) Do a board search of diclegis!
  • Ok thank you ladies!! I'm so tired of feeling like crap! I think Unisom it will be!

  • Just don't take it if you need to drive! Or need to focus haha. That might just be me personally but it is very powerful but works wonders at night :) or if you can just stay home for awhile. Feel better very soon momma!

  • Also I might call and complain to his supervisor it's not very appropriate for a pharmacist to do what he did in questioning your doctors decision.

Fuuck that pharmacist and his outdated opinion. He obviously knows nothing about the medication and should not have fearmongered you into not following your doctor's advice. The fact that he had to go look it up on the computer is a huge red flag. Idiot.

Get the unisom. The ingredient you want is doxylamine succinate. A similar drug was taken off the market in the US, but since, extensive research was done and Diclegis recently became available as a pregnancy-safe anti-nausea medication. It's class A, meaning studies show NO adverse effects on baby. I also trust the European drug administrations; their standards for food and drugs are better than ours. It was never off the market there.
  • If you get unisom, make sure it's the little blue tablets and you can cut in half. I took it with my last pregnancy and worked perfectly.
  • I take unisom at night. It will work but it knocks me out!

It only made me tired for the first two weeks or so. Now it doesn't make me tired at all. I can take it in the middle of the day and be totally fine. It's sort of a bummer, because the help sleeping was nice!
  • I second everyone's opinions.
The pharmacist should not be googling, we already do that on our own, and it's not helpful.
Scientific evidence suggests this is very safe.
My experience is similar to @acadia07; after about a week the drowsiness subsides - I drive to and back to work and am fine. Just at the very beginning you might want to be aware that it will make you drowsy for a bit.
  • I actually want to edit my previous post to say: I second everyone's facts!
  • That's good to know at @Serpica I've only been on it a week. Hope the drowsiness wears off soon!

  • With diclegis I was extremely drowsy the first few days (taking one pill) but I got used to it. I upped to two and I was about a zillion times drowsier. It's been about four days and I'm waking up a little bit.
  • Get it. Take it. Be a functioning human again.

  • The drowsiness definitely wears off! I'm down to only taking it at night right now, but when I have bad days I will take a half tab during the day. You can buy the off brand, just make sure you look for the one with the main ingredient doxy...something or other.
  • The previous medicine (I can't recall the name right now), was taken off the market do to fear mongering. * It was continued in other countries and has been for years. It returned about 3 years ago under diclegis.

There js about 30 years of studies with diclegis. Your pharmacist information is wrong and out of date.

    * I have a feeling that this is our modern day version of Zofran.
    Thank God for Raid.

  • I've been doing the Unisom/B6 combo for a few weeks now. I've actually gone the past three days without puking, and I stopped the B6. I didn't feel like the B6 was making a difference at all, but I see a noticeable difference if I skip the Unisom at night (I'm really sick the next day).
