1st Trimester

sleepy all the time!

I am only 8 weeks and i feel so exhausted all the time even when im not doing anything. Ive been getting 9 hours or so of sleep a night but feel i could sleep another 2 hours easily. I force myself to get up. Ive been waking up once in a while in the middle of the night to pee or eat but i fall back asleep quite quickly . Anyone else wanting to sleep rediculous amounts of hours ?

Re: sleepy all the time!

  • Progesterone increases during pregnancy. It tends to make you tired (among other things) so it isn't surprising. I've been sleeping a solid 7-8 hours at night and taking a nap in the afternoon and I still just want to fall back asleep all the time. It's awful.

  • You're growing a human. It's totally normal. Enjoy the ample sleep while you can as it will be harder to come by as your belly grows and sleep is less comfortable.

  • It's normal. It got progressively better for me once entering 2nd Tri, but I still sleep more than I did pre pregnancy.

  • Yes! I am 8 weeks and feel the same way, I get about 9 hours of sleep a night and am exhausted every day. They say this should pass after the 1st trimester, and it can't come fast enough!
  • Definitely normal. I've even been taking naps on my lunch break cause I feel so sleepy.
What helps though is eating only light foods. Processed heavy foods make it worse. Try eating more greens. It will definitely be a big bonus for baby too :)

  • During my first tri I was only working one job part time - I had days where I easily slept off-and-on for 12 hours. It gets better in the second tri.
  • I'm definitely with you on this one! I normally had a coffee every morning and I thought I would be tired throughout the day

before this, boy was I wrong. :) I'm finding out what tired is! I'm 6 weeks, been off coffee since I found out and I feel like I

could sleep anywhere! Church, work, in the car (which if my husband is driving, I'm normally out solid). I'm encouraged to

hear it will hopefully go away in 2nd tri! :)

  • At least we're all in good company! It takes everything I have to not fall asleep at my desk during work--and that's after getting a good 9, sometimes even 10 hours at night! Over the weekend, I woke up at 8 AM, and took a nap at 10! My mommy friends say to sleep while you can and not feel guilty about it! Its also helpful that my husband has been awesome helping out with chores and stuff that I'd normally do at night after work, but just can't find the energy to do them now.

I'm putting a lot of hope into the 2nd tri! Here's to more energy and less nausea :-)
  • Agreed. With my son I took a nap EVERY day after work. This time around I only get naps on the weekend when DH is home to watch our 4 year old. I just look like a zombie most of the time. Praying I get energy in the 2nd trimester!

  • All of this....  with my first pregnancy I was tired... This time around... its a whole other level of exhaustion... I could sleep 20hrs a day I bet - unfortunately I work, have a DH, DD and 2 dogs to take care of so that's damn near impossible :) but a girl can dream!

  • It will get better! I was that way for my first 9-10 weeks. I'm 11weeks today and I'm still tired, but no where near as bad as I was. I literally was exhausted all day. I had exteme fatigue with everything I did.

  • Anyone have any simple tips they find helpful? I am waiting a bit to share to news but by around 2 PM I can't keep my eyes open and there are still hours to go in the workday.

    Don't get pregnant? J/k.
    Rush into the 2nd trimester?

To to be serious, Some women swear by taking a short but brisk walk. Personally, I don't believe that works. But it might work for you.
    Thank God for Raid.

  • I live in the Midwest, and sometimes a quick walk, outside, around my building helps give me a little more energy mid-afternoon. I think its the brisk, fresh winter air!
  • Thanks ladies i dont feel so crazy !! Its the worst from about 2 to 5 pm ... especially at work. I could practically fall asleep standing !!
  • At 9 weeks i tend to find myself either constantly tired or rushing to a bathroom as the morning sickness has hit pretty hard these last few weeks too. Cant wait for 2nd tri to get some form of energy back!

Agreed....I'm actually MORE tired 2nd tri and did not need naps 1st tri. Also, I wake at least twice in the night to pee and that is breaking up my good sleep hours even more. I think 2nd tri rebound is a myth.
