May Mommy Book Club

Ok... Discussions used to have the option to make a poll which would make this sooo much easier! I thought since we had so many readers and there was an interest we should go ahead and start (or at least make a plan to start). The holidays are kind of hectic so I didn't know if maybe it would be easier if we decided on a book now and made a plan but started the book in January it would be easier??

  • Would it be easier to start a book this month or next month?
  • How often do you want to have a check in?
  • What book would you like to start?

I think maybe next month would be more orderly to start.

Maybe have a check in every 2 weeks and only discuss pages 1-whatever so as not to spoil it for people who haven't read that far?

My book recs are: Still Alice by Lisa Genova, Turtle Moon by Alice Hoffman, Mama Tried: Dispatches From the Seamy Underbelly of Modern Parenting by Emily Flake, and The One & Only by Emily Giffin

Definitely up for this and think that next month would more than likely be easier. I personally will read darn near anything. Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand has been on my list forever...I've been wanting to read Still Alice as well and Mama Tried seems like a good read for the group. Check in every two weeks would work for me and we can either do it by page or chapters.

  • @ncm0328 I was trying to stay away from Mom books to give us some kind of grasp on ourselves as people/women instead of mommy to be or wife, etc. BUT the Mama Tried book looks like short stories and essays that are humorous and relatable on the level of being a person/woman just in the stage we're at now. I think it encompasses all of us meaning FTM, STM, and so on.

  • Yeah I read a little about it and it definitely doesn't look like the typical mom book. We don't necessarily have to start with that one, but it does look like a good contender for some point in the lineup. It would start us off in a more light hearted and comical direction if we did choose that for first read and I'm up for that. I've got Still Alice on my kindle ready to go along with a few others as well.

I'm finishing up my birthing book currently..Ina May's Guide to Childbirth. Definitely could use something off topic of transitioning, tearing, and all the beauty of childbirth.
  • This would be wonderful! Starting next month would work best for me. I just got through a non fiction phase so I'm no help on the book recommendations. I wouldn't mind rereading Fire or Graceling by Kristin Cashore though.
  • Any other books that you could suggest for me personally. Not mommy books, for my holidays. Need suggestions! Sorry to hog your post @doozer1345 :)
  • I'm interested as well! I can start this month (already reading a few different books).

    Keep me posted!
  • BTW, one book I'm reading now is Never Let Me Go, which has been a super easy read. Highly recommended!
  • Yes! I agree that starting in January would be best to give us time to pick and get the book. I'm up for anything, really in terms of which book to read.
  • Love this idea! On board for January and happy to read whichever book the group decides!
  • Love this. Ready to start whenever!

Me too! I really feel like I'm slacking in the reading department. I used to read so much! Maybe this will give me some motivation to pick it back up again. :)
  • I want to play too!

Can we decide on a book before Christmas? I'm going to my inlaws over the holidays and can order it to be shipped their home. It's very difficult for me to find English books in Mexico and it's nearly impossible for things to be delivered down here!
  • Count me in! I have school and work, so I may be a little behind on the reading, but I definitely want to join! January would be good for me, too!
  • I am so on board! And I can give the book as an idea for a Christmas gift! Score.

  • I'm in! Any of those sound good.
  • I'm interested as well. My only concern is that once I'm into a book, I've been known to finish it in a few days. But I would just restrain myself and not spoil it!
  • Brilliant! So glad we're doing this!

I agree with PPs - starting next month would be best, and if we could choose one before year end, that would be awesome!

Check in every 2 weeks seems fine with me :)

My picks: The Clasp by Sloane Crosley and The Marriage of Opposites by Alice Hoffman

    Thanks!

There's an older thread that is called Book Worms that has a ton of recs in it.

  • Alright ladies......We will start next month. Check in every 2 weeks (with pages and/or chapters highlighted). Now, we need a concrete decision on books. Vote on the ones that have been mentioned:

    Still Alice
    Turtle Moon
    The Marriage of Opposites
    The Clasp
    Fire
    Graceling
    Atlas Shrugged
    Mama Tried

  • So, I am strangely motivated and put together  a list of all the suggested books. Is it ok if I make a survey so we can vote on which book to read, with a cut-off date for voting at 12/18? That way we can democratically pick a book and have it all set by Christmas. Does that sound good to all? There are 10 books on the list just from this thread, but hopefully with a survey it will help us narrow it down.

  • I voted on the poll. I will say that I would love to read Still Alice. It has been on my list ever since I saw the movie.
  • The poll is up and running!
    Awesome! Thanks! :D
