Baby eating enough?-formula

Sorry if this has been posted before- i thought it was but i wouldnt find it.

Lo is 8 weeks old. She is formula fed with Similac for spit up (added rice starch)
During the day she eats 3-4 oz overy 2 hoursm but then come night shes only eating 2 oz every 4 hours.

She seems to be gaining fine. (Has md appt next week)

Does that seem like a very little amount to anyone else?

Shes about 10.5 lbs. Born 6.15

How much do your lo eat?

Re: Baby eating enough?-formula

  • My LO is breastfed so no personal experience to offer, but we had her 2 month appt yesterday and the sheet they sent home said formula fed babies would likely eat between 2-4 oz every 3-4 hours so sounds like she is getting enough. Her weight gain seems good so unless she is giving signs it's not enough, you're probably good.

  • Thanks! A big reason i stopped breast feeding was i had so much anxiety because i neber knew how much she ate. Im a little ocd with that :)
  • My lo is 7 weeks and she normally sleeps through the night now (11 ish to around 5) so she now eats more during the day. From what I've read, that's pretty normal because they're adjusting to eventually be able to go longer at night without eating.
  • My LO is 10 weeks and he eats 4-6 oz every 2-3 hours. He actually slept thru the night last night woohoo!!! 8-530. But he has been waking around 2-3 am to eat another 4 oz then sleeping till 630-7 ish. But he just started eating up to 6 oz.

My LO is all over the place so I write down his feedings and see what he is averaging a day. Rule of thumb for formula is 2 to 2.5 oz per pound of body weight so your LO should be eating anywhere between 21 and 26.5 oz in a 24 hour period.
  • My daughter eats about 22 oz per day (on average). She typically eats 3-4oz every 3 hours in the morning and afternoon, then cluster feeds from around 4-7pm. Then she goes to bed around 8 and sleeps until roughly 5am. I am always worried about her not getting enough, but she is gaining perfectly and is happy so I figure she is :)
  • My baby is 8 weeks old and eats 20-24 oz a day. As long as baby is gaining and your pediatrician is happy, I wouldn't stress too much about the actual amount.

It's okay to eat less at night as long as she's making up for it during the day and getting roughly the 2-2.5 oz per pound of body weight.
  • Harper is 2 months today. She eats 4 oz around 7,10,1,4,7,10 and sleeps 11pm-6:30am. So she gets 24 oz a day and sleeps a stretch of 7-8 hours at night (has been since 6 weeks).
  • Wow all you ladies have great sleepers!!
My baby is 9 weeks and takes about 3.5 ounces every 3 hours, sometimes she asks for it sooner (formula)
At night she usually sleeps around 9-930 and stay asleep until 1-130 at which point she takes another 3.5 ounces and goes back to sleep until around 5-53, drinks another 3.5 ounces.
Hoping she will start a bit longer stretches soon - was thinking about feeding her a bit more before bedtime to encourage her to sleep a little longer...
When you calculate the whole body weight times 2.5, she is drinking a bit more then that but I don't focus on numbers ... I go by her hunger cues and I know she doesn't spit up .. She's a big baby lol.
  • Thanks so much! Must've been an off day. Shes eating much better and has had 4 hour stretcges at night!! Progress! !
