Preemie Milestones

I know all babies develop on their own schedule but I had a preemie at 34 weeks, she is now 4 months actual and would just now be 3 months adjusted. She has great head control and cooing and babbles all day, she socially smiles and has been for at least a month and a half. But during tummy time she won't push up but will hold her head up. She can't roll over, she can't sit on her own at all, she can sit with us holding her back and she leans over in her bumbo seat. I was just wondering if anybody has any experience with preemies and late milestones.

Re: Preemie Milestones

  • I don't personally, but my niece was born at 25 weeks and barely survived. She was greatly behind on her milestones. She didn't crawl until her 1st bday.

It sounds like you are doing great for being a little behind.

  • My nephew was born in 27 weeks. Right now he is 7/5 months he is developing just fine and reaching his milestones at his own pace. Doing things what 5 month old baby should do. It takes is up to 3 years for preemies to catch up to babies who are born on time. Sounds like your little princess also is doing great! I think in here we hear more about babies who are way ahead of their age mates so even more mothers are worrying about their own baby development. Rolling at 6 weeks isn't expected from any baby and yet some do ;)
  • My nephew was born at 30 weeks and he was right on track with his adjusted age, and it sounds like your little girl is too. He's 3.5 years now and he's perfectly healthy and developmentally caught up
  • My wee girl was a 34 weeker too (born 27 July) and is about where your bubs is at. She did roll tummy to back but it's not regular. Sitting may still be a way off - some term babies don't sit until after they've learnt to crawl, so I wouldn't worry about it. Are you doing tummy time every day? My girl can still only manage about 5 mins at a time so I try to do it on the floor a couple of times a day, as well as some lying on my tummy while I'm on the couch. I also baby wear a lot, which seems to be helping her get great at holding her head up. Sounds like you're pretty much on track though so good job mama!

It just takes time :) I was born at 26 weeks and I didnt even roll till around 1. I could barely walk at 2, and now, I'm walking and running and very athletic. You might consider doing therapy. Our daughter was born at 37 weeks which can be considered term, but she had some problems which is why she was also in the NICU for a month. She is 6 months, doesn't roll or do any of that front to back things. She is still learning to balance. When we put her in the bumbo we put receiving blankets around her to support her otherwise she would just slide. She sees a NP once a month, OT and PT every other week and we have done therapy since she was born. I would ask your pediatrician if there is early intervention or therapy that he/she recommends you looking into. It helped us and our daughter a lot :) we do head and neck exercises, legs and arms and even eye contact and social therapy with her. Our daughter is 6 months and just barely started sitting up and pushing up on her own. She also doesn't sit up by herself, we help her :) Also, don't worry and don't compare to other babies. Everyone is different and will develop at there own time :) good luck!
  • Yes we do tummy time as much as she will, she doesn't like it too well but we try at least 3 times a day. And she also isn't reaching for things yet, we had her 4 month check up and her doctor said we have 2 month before anything becomes even a small concern.
