Infertility

New to Board - New to Infertility Specialists

Hello!  I am a 34, married to my fabulous husband going on 15 months.  We started trying to conceive about a year ago, and after no luck, our OB/GYN suggested we seek help at an infertility clinic.  Three appointments later, we have almost 100% confirmed that I have PCOS.  My husband had himself checked out, and fortunately he's 100% healthy.  I'm slightly frustrated that my regular OB/GYN never saw the signs for this as I am very regular at all of my check-ups.  After the initial two blood screenings, the doctor has put me on some meds.  I'm on Metformin, Synthroid (my thyroid was normal, but slightly elevated to get pregnant), and of course a prenatal vitamin.  The next step is to wait for AF to arrive and then schedule a SHG (sonohystogram) to confirm PCOS and make sure everything else is okay.

Going down this road is scary.  It's even scarier because it is SO hard to discuss with anyone.  I have two friends I confide in with our lack of conceiving over the last year, but I deal with so many family members and friends who ask what we are waiting for.  It's none of their business.  I simply say it's out of our control as to when it will happen.

As much as I wish this were easier, I'm so happy to be here on this board to talk to other women who are going through similar situations.  I know I'm only in the beginning stages of this process, but I need support and want to give support!

Any advice on how to start working through this process would certainly be appreciated.  It's very overwhelming.

  • I'm sorry you are frustrated with your doctor, I understand though. My doctors were going back and forth with me having PCOS and I was so annoyed because no one would give me a definite yes or no!

This whole process can be so overwhelming your right! My suggestion is to dive in head first! Once the ball starts rolling, continue to make those doctors appointments and follow ups and tests etc. do everything that you can, because it's all worth it to have a little bundle of joy! And never lose sight of what will wait for you when you work through this all. Every test I just kept reminding myself, this is for my future baby! It helped me through the emotions of it all. Best of luck to you and your husband!

  • @taragust is absolutely right.  It's all worth it in the end.  Every injection, as it burns its way in, I just think "BABY!  It's worth it for the baby!"  It works!!  AND, when people asked when I was going to have a baby, I started saying "We're trying, it's not going well."  Hey, it shut them up and they stopped asking or asked with more tact and concern.

  • I understand how it's so hard to talk to people about this stuff, and how frustrating it is when people ask when you will start having kids.  Congrats to you on taking next steps with a specialist!  You have so many great treatment options available if you are diagnosed with PCOS.  Hopefully you get your BFP soon! :)

  • Thank you all so much!  You're so right that with each injection and appointment that I need to remind myself this is for our baby!  Sometimes when you start heading into something like this it is hard to see the big picture.  It is good to start having a plan.  It's better than every month being blind with the exception of our ovulation predictor kits.  When I walk into the doctor's office, I want to share with the women around me, but we all sit there so quiet.  It is such a unique experience because we are all really there for the same reason, with obviously different circumstances.

I'm encouraged to hear that there are many great treatment options for PCOS.  Looking forward to a BFP in the near future.  :-)
