Zofran unsafe for baby?

Did a search on google and found disturbing info on Zofran risk to baby. Do doctors really prescribe this to women? I keep reading on the forums here that a lot of women take it for nausea. Are they unaware of the potential harm to baby? I avoid any medications during pregnancy if I can help it. Suffering from nausea myself and wishing there was a safe cure.

    1. There is a safe medication called Diclegis that you can take for nausea. Some people rely on medication to eat and drink. If everyone could get by without it, they would.

    2. Nothing has been proven about Zofran. Doctors are prescribing it less because of the lawsuits, but nothing is concrete. I took Zofran regularly during my first two pregnancies and my babies were big and perfectly healthy. I take it occasionally this pregnancy to stop vomiting, but Diclegis is helping a lot with my general sickness, so I need Zofran much less.

  • I took it with my son 3+ years ago before they came out with all of that information.  It worked very well and my son is fine, fortunately.

I'm not going to judge other women who take it because that is between them and their obstetricians, and I assume that together they have weighed the risks/benefits as with any medication.  There are safe drugs out there, such as Diclegis, which is Class A.  You could talk to your doctor about it.

  • I took Zofran 6+ years ago and my son is perfectly healthy.

This time around, I'll probably try diclegis (never heard of it before, but why not). Zofran worked great, but it constipated me a lot :(

  • My mother took Zofran 14 years ago and my brother was completely fine. I recently called my midwife and she will discuss with my OB if I can get a prescription. I don't need it on a regular bases. Mainly when I'm at work or need to be able to eat.
  • Do you also know that women posting on forums is not an scientific research method?

And I have read the FDA's stance on Zofran. Have you?

I have also read the lastst research on it.

But I guess some fear mongering money gabby Lawler has made up your mind w/o any confirmation.

    Stupid scientific evidence be damned.
    Thank God for Raid.

  • You know, as mothers we can get a lot of criticism and judgment about pretty much all of the choices we make. There is a way to share information that you find without coming across as judgmental and holier than thou. We all love our babies just as much as you do, and I'm sure any woman who has chosen to take a medication during pregnancy that comes with risks has discussed it thoroughly with their trained medical professional and weighed the risk vs. benefit. Most of them would probably stop taking any medications they are on in a heartbeat if it was possible, just to minimize any possible risk.

Congratulations on not taking any medication while pregnant. Not everyone is so lucky.

  • I took Zofran my entire pregnancy (6 years ago) and my daughter is perfectly healthy. I was throwing up on average 7 times a day and lost a lot of weight. I had to take something to stay healthy for myself and my baby. A big difference between Diclegis and Zofran is with Diclegis  you have to take every day, Zofran you don't necessarily have to take, maybe just on a day that you are especially struggling with nausea.
