milk expression room problems, work drama

I'm so POed. Someone unlocked the milk expression room and opened the door while I was pumping today because she needed items in the room and didn't know I was in there. I have made a do not disturb sign and don't think it will happen again. I'm mostly pissed because those items shouldn't even be in that room. They are commode parts; specifically buckets that hold urine and feces when someone needs to use the bathroom at night next to the bed. They are "clean" as my boss would say, and she states that it is perfectly fine to store them in the pumping room. My argument is that a pumping room provided at work by law cannot be a bathroom, and I think these buckets, that have been used ( however clean, I don't care) are violating this law. Someone coming into the room today to get these buckets was the last straw for me, I'm pissed and I want to call the Department of Labor to ask them what my rights are. I was wondering what you ladies thought, am I in the wrong to demand these be kept somewhere else?

This wouldn't bother me too much, but to each their own...well I guess it depends on how big the room is and where the buckets are stored.  I would talk to your supervisor more about it and if she still won't do anything/help you with it, I would bring it up to HR.

  • I'd be pissed too. I'd suggest trying to calm down a bit before discussing with your boss though. I've always heard "don't come to your boss with a problem, come to them with a solution." Is there somewhere else the buckets can be stored? Somewhere else you can pump? What exactly do you want her to do?

I would let her know about the person walking in on you, but at the end of the day your boss can't do anything to undo that. Your sign should prevent that going forward. In case you want another idea, my sister had to pump in a room that didn't lock at all. She bought a cheap rubber doorstop and put that on the inside when she was pumping so people couldn't open the door. I don't think the law even requires a locking door. And although it does say it can't be a bathroom, I'm not sure that your claim that this is bathroom-like will work. I agree with you, personally. But I imagine that going through the DOL will be a lot of trouble and not a quick solution (and probably bad for your career).

Good luck! I hope everything works out!
