Nora becoming too popular?

Nora is one of our favorite names for LO due 2/26 but it's becoming super popular! When we first talked about the name it was in the 300's on the top girl name list. Now it's #49 and supposedly going to be in the top 10 for 2016...
So do we keep it on the list even though it's getting super popular? I was semi against anything in like the top 25 names.

Current name list:
1. Nora June
2. Annie (maybe Ann) June
3. Sadie June (DH doesn't love this)

Re: Nora becoming too popular?

  • I love Nora June.

I wouldn't worry about it, to be honest. Every single name that we're considering for our daughter (including middles) would have been in the hundreds in the previous years. Now, they are all projected to be top 30 for 2016. I opted out of letting it bother me and just take it as validation that they are beautiful names. Nora June is classically lovely. She may have another Nora in her class, or she may not.

I have noticed that a lot of the projected names for 2016 have a common theme of being classic and elegant names. Violet, Thea, Iris, Nora, Alice, Amelia, Isla, Claire, etc. I'd choose what you really love and go with it.

  • I wouldn't worry about popularity since it changes so often and you never know how many other kids in your child's class will have that name. You could have none, 1 or 5 but nobody knows. Out of your list even though it's nms, I like Nora June, it sounds really nice. If you love a name then use it.

  • I love Nora. It's definitely becoming more popular but I don't think it will be a top 10 name.
  • This was just released and Nora is #30- that's not bad.

I am similarly stressed about classic names becoming increasingly popular so I understand you worry as well.  If you both love Nora, I say go ahead and name her what you love.  That's more important

  • Sadie is also becoming popular.
  • I have a good friend who just named her daughter Nora Hadley and I have fallen in love with it! I think Nora is a great name!
  • It's a great name but is definitely becoming more popular as you said.  We considered it for DS3 just 2 years ago and it was not all that 'popular' back then.  It's still totally up to you, but for me personally, I decided to go a different route (this one is actually a girl lol).  Think of it this way, at least you know it's rising in popularity.  Imagine all the people who used it a few years ago thinking they were being somewhat original, I bet they're annoyed now!  We also had a similar problem with Evelyn, I've loved that name for years, but it's too popular for my liking now.
One other thing to add to my rambling non-sense, overall I think the popularity rankings are helpful and pretty accurate, but there are definitely names in our area that are super popular, that are a little lower on the SSA list.  For example I can undoubtly say that Lilly, Lillian and Lilliana are by far more popular than Emma and Sophia in my son's preschool, although there are still a few of those too.  I live in Pittsburgh, but the SSA rankings for PA also take include Philly, which is 5 hrs away and not necessarily on the same page  as we are here, and I feel like ends up swaying them a little.  So take into account what you are seeing in your area, not just what the # is.

  • I think it depends on your circle and where you live. I personally know of at leas 4 Noras under the age of 3 but I don't know any baby Olivias so I'd base it more on what's around you and your LO.
  • It is but not in the realm of Charlotte/Ava/Olivia/Sophia (The "Heathers" of this baby naming generation)

We briefly considered Norah. We just didn't REALLY feel it but we also didn't feel that it was too popular, and we're sensitive to that. It's pretty. You should use it!

This ^ is exactly why you should just use it.
Nora is beautiful. I love it paired with June.

  • It might be a bit popular, but it you love it, use it.  I loved my boy name for years and years and it was #46 I believe in our state at the time of my son's birth.  I used it anyway and am glad I did.
  • Nora June. Beautiful!

  • LOVE Nora!!! Our baby's name is in the top 10 and has been for a while. But I love his name so we're using it anyways- besides. I know two other boys with his name and haven't seen it used on the BMB at all :)
    Nora June is lovely!
  • I hear it a lot, there are lots of little Nora/Norah's plus I run into lots of little Eleanors who also go by Nora. But it is a beautiful name!
  • I have a name that was very popular when I was born and it was never that big of a deal. Nora is a beautiful name and out of your list it's the best and the only one that pairs well with June, imo.
  • It just depends how much you like the name vs how important popularity is to you. But yes I heart Nora a lot lately.
