fell down stairs

So I just fell down an entire flight of stairs trying to carry down the laundry basket.

Pretty much landed straight on my ass & slid lol. I know the baby is so cushioned in there and most likely nothing is wrong. Should I still call my doctor and tell her? I'm the type who thinks I should just shake it off so I wanted other people's opinions.

I will say that it was a pretty hard fall. It woke up my son...and now I can't sit down lol

  • I'd agree that you're probably fine. Your doctor would probably want to know though. They'll likely just tell you to take it easy and watch out for bleeding. If it were me I'd call just in case!

  • Yes. I say yes to calling the doctor bc I did the same thing when I was pg with DD and didn't call the doctor. Nothing happened and DD and I were fine but my doc and nurse were super pissed at me when I mentioned it as a stupid clumsy story. A lot of the time they're just wanting to know to make a record of it just in case. How far along are you?? When I fell I fell down the stairs on my side and had a League of Their Own bruise down my thigh:

  • I would call the doctor, even just to confirm from a reputable source what to look for etc., but I'm kind of a worrier anyway. Hope you're not in too much pain!

14 weeks. & I was just thinking I was going to bruise like that! Haha
  • @kami09 God love ya! At least with mine i had no feeling bc DD was sitting on that nerve which cut off the feeling from 6 mos on. I wouldn't worry too much right now and just call the doc in the morning just to let them know. I hope it doesn't hurt too bad in the morning! Take some Tylenol before you go to bed!

  • Oh no! So sorry that happened! I'm a big worrier so if it were me I would probably call my doc... However, unless you are having bleeding or cramping from the fall you are probably fine!
  • Ouch!!! That's the worst. I'm in the same camp as you where I'd normally shake it off, but I think calling your doctor just to let them know is the best option, and let them be the judge. I hope you can sit down again soon! :(
  • Eek. I hope you're feeling okay!

As others have said, I'd call the doctor just to be sure, and so that they can tell you what to monitor, but you're probably going to be more bruised than anything else landing the way you described.

FWIW, it was around this time with DS that I started just bagging up my laundry and throwing/pushing it down the stairs rather than trying to carry it (just be careful to not get caught on the drawstring). I'm still doing stairs carrying things right now, sometimes holding DS; I'm sort of feeling like I shouldn't now that I think about it.
  • That is a total bummer! So sorry you had the fall, but landing on your butt was the best possible outcome. Last week, my demon cat leapt on me while I was walking down the stairs (thankfully I wasn't carrying my son!) and I fell to the side, bumped my right hip and thigh on the railing and stairs, and tumbled on my side down about 4 stairs before catching myself and detaching the cat from my left thigh (I have lovely claw and bite marks on the left and a nice purple bruise on the right). I was irrationally terrified because at the last US the baby was hanging out by my right hip (of course, baby has moved a million times since then!). I am a huge minimizer though and just sat down on the couch, drank a sugary drink, and waited until I felt movement (I have been feeling flutters for a few weeks now). Once I felt those first few flutters, I finally could relax, but I probably should've called my doctor. I had an appointment on Monday and my OB was totally cool, but said I should feel free to call if something like that happens again.

I also agree with @kbrands7 that you get really creative about finding ways to decrease your risk on the stairs especially. I too bag up my laundry and just toss it down the stairs, I encourage my son to walk down the stairs as much as possible, and I try to consolidate the times I need to go up and down. I am super paranoid about stairs in general (but also have severe claustrophobia so elevators are out!) so I have lots of experience being super cautious.

I would say you and baby should be fine, but to check with your doctor just in case. Hope you feel better!
