too early to shop for baby

When is it okay to shop for baby

Re: too early to shop for baby

  • Whenever you want....there is no magical time when you can start buying.

I personally am not going to buy very much until I see a heartbeat because of previous losses.

The popular wisdom seems to be that you should wait until later in the pregnancy, and even after any shower if you are having one. But really it is up to you. I've already bought a carrier and some GN cloth diapers.
Rainbow baby Dean is due 2/17/17!
  • Always. When I was trying, I shopped before I even got pregnant ;)

  • As all PP's have stated, shop whenever you feel like it!

  • @WinchesterGirl Do you have other children? I'm looking into cloth diapers, and really not sure what the right choice for us will be

  • @DisneyIsabelle We clothed until we moved overseas. Jillian's Drawers has a great diaper sampler program that lets you try a wide variety of styles to figure out what you like before making a huge investment. The style of diaper you like may change as they get older too. With newbies I really liked AIOs (all in ones), but once they started solids I preferred prefolds/covers.

The cloth diaper forum here is a really good resource.

  • @xath Thanks! Since I work from home and spend most time at home I feel as though it could be a good option for us. A local maternity store has a cloth diaper work shop for just $25 to try hands on different styles
  • @DisneyIsabelle we do not, but my SIL successfully cloth diapered my nephew birth to potty, and I'm familiar with them from using them at their house. Feel free to send me a PM if you have any specific questions! I have seen everything from prefolds, fitteds, Pockets, AIOs, etc. :)

  • @WinchesterGirl Thank you! I'm feeling like 9 months isn't a long time! haha I'm just at my first missed period today/tomorrow but got a positive (or 3) on Thanksgiving morning. So, I've already read 2-3 books, made a name list, and grabbed some more books from the library yesterday. I keep finding myself obsessively reading in the wee hours of the morning. I should just sleep while I can! haha I guess I still have time to sort out decisions like cloth vs. disposable. On one hand the convenience of disposable and less frequent changes, on the other hand less chemicals touching baby with cloth.
  • I've been asking myself this too! I had IVF, so I told myself, I'll wait till after our first ultrasound. That way I can see if there is 1 or 2 in there, before I start buying things!   But I agree, I say start whenever you want :)

  • @DisneyIsabelle Curious... What books are you reading? I'd like to start reading up.

  • @rikopy For starters I was reading the Mayo Clinic Pregnancy book, this is a fairly good one. However, I'm more curious to read about caring for baby and bonding, etc. Because I started with what was available at the library a lot of them are fairly outdated. There's a few I want to order from amazon for sure. I'm also reading what to expect: the first year (although What to Expect When Your Expecting is actually not super highly rated compared to others). I do want to do some research on labor methods, etc. as well. Well, really I want to research everything haha Also for fun I've been browsing name books. I borrow ebooks on my iPad from the library, as well as visit the library. You can check with yours to see if they have an app for ebooks.
