ECV Experiences

3rd baby, and 38 +1 today and come to find out that baby boy turned breech. He has been head down since 34 weeks and has now flipped within this past week. I'm going in for an ECV tomorrow morning, and to be honest, I'm scared. I'm mostly scared of it not working and having to go for a c-section. Any advice/experiences?

  • I don't have any experience yet but just scheduled mine today for next Monday! So I wish you all the best and hope it turns out well for you! I'd love to hear about your experience tomorrow.

If it makes you feel any better my dr was giving me very low odds of it being successful on me (I'm a FTM, shape of my uterus, lack of amniotic fluid) but she said her advice is that it's worth a shot because the risks are very low. And at 37-38 weeks the baby is full term so in the VERY unlikely chance that it stresses the baby out they can get him out in minutes and they will be fine. I asked her when she's had to do that how did things work out, were the babies ok etc, and she said yes, it wasn't all that much different than a scheduled c section. So if that's the road we're going down anyways that a c section now if things go south won't be vastly different than a c section next week since they're unlikely to turn on their own!
  • I would recommend hitting up spinningbabies.com. I've also heard that getting on all fours gives the baby the room they need to flip into the vertex position. Being relaxed is a key factor in helping along with an ECV and I know that's a hard mindset to get in when you're staring a c-section in the face. I wish you much luck on your procedure tomorrow and am sending good baby-flipping thoughts your way!

Update: must have just been an off day for baby. He flipped himself back down overnight. Easiest version ever according to my OB. Lol.
I am going to be induced on the 7th (39w+1d) to ensure he doesn't flip again and get stuck.
  • @beckifrasoer that's great!! I wish my little guy would take some notes haha he's been head up for months straight now though so I would be shocked to see that happen :/
  • Thats awesome news!!! So happy for you
  • @beckifrasoer did you happen to feel the baby flip? Sorry for the dumb question but just curious (I'm a FTM)
  • @rachel10488, my boy was never head down until 35 weeks, and apparently can flip back over at 38. Lol. There's still hope.

@christinemelanie, I noticed he was moving around a ton but nothing like a huge flip (maybe because I was concerned and paying more attention to it), but I think it happened while I was asleep. Usually you can tell the baby's positon when they get hiccips and the evening before he still felt breech. If they're head down, you can feel the hiccups usually belly button level and lower.
