Working Moms

Any FTM freelancers/work from home moms?

Hello all. I'm a ftm of an adorable 6 weeks old baby boy and a freelancer.
Are there any other moms like this?
How do you manage?

I'm so stressed because having my own company makes it very hard for me to be on leave and keep my customers at the same time. No one is going to wait for me, they will look for another freelancer to help them and in the business world that's normal.

In short, I have been working almost from day 1 after the hospital and it sucks so much because all I want to do is take care of my LO and the last thing I need is work related stress (esp since it has been a few work emergencies :/ )

On the other hand having the option to work from home is an advantage since I don't get to leave my boy and I can only admire and support all the moms who go back to work after a few weeks of leave. My mom went back to work after 5 weeks.

Well I just wanted to rant a bit (bloody hormones :p) Thanks for listening.

  • Hi I wfh and I feel blessed. I'm still on mat leave but I just hired a nanny. There's no way I could work and take care of my son. Do you have help at home or do you do both? If you do both, how do you do it? Lo is 6 weeks old.

  • Yes, I am a freelancer. I have childcare. There is no way I could do it at the level I do without. I quit and became a freelancer when my second son was about 10 months old and I've had them in at least 2-3 days a week of daycare ever since. Once in awhile my workload exceeds that and I work nights and weekends when DH is home. I could not imagine trying to do it while taking care of a newborn. I think you wouldn't be able to give your best to either side if you were that divided. That being said, I do plan to take on a few simple projects during my maternity leave, but only because I have friends/family that are willing to help if I get in a bind. Is this your long term plan, or do you plan to have daycare eventually? I feel your pain, it is hard to juggle a family and freelance sometimes because your clients want to each and all be your top priority all the time. However, I do think if you explained to them that you are taking a couple months off to be with your newborn they would probably understand. At the very least you could just say your workload is really high right now and you can only take on smaller projects. I do that sometimes because I hate telling my clients I have a sick kid or whatever because I worry they will not come back. The benefits of working from home and setting your own hours really outweigh the downsides though! Good luck to you! I hope you are able to find some balance.
