1st Trimester

neg hpts but then postive

Just wondering while I wait. Doctors appt. still a week and a half away. LMP Oct 3rd (cycles between 30-35 days) Negative HPTs for 2.5 weeks. So I stopped taking them and assumed something wasn't right. I had various mild symptoms and implantation bleeding at end of oct. Decided to take one more at what was 7 weeks since LMP and it was rapidly a dark positive (if shade matters). I took 6 more (because I didn't believe my eyes!) All positive. Just wondering if there have been others who have had this happen? I am assuming I had slow to rise HCG? ovulated late? Just wondering if others had this experience?

Yes! With my first, I noticed my period was a week and 1/2 late (and I was always like clockwork), but got a negative HPT. Two weeks later, I got a super dark positive. Yes, shade matters, because it tells you how strong your hormone levels are. I found out when I took the first test, I was over 4 weeks pregnant with a negative. With the second, I was over 6 weeks pregnant! It can happen, even that late. The levels can just be a little low at the beginning. Or, it could be that the tests we took sucked! It sounds to me like you're very much pregnant! I wish you luck!

Implantation bleeding or IB is very rare. It happens 6-9 days after ovulation. It then takes about 3 days after implantation (with or with out bleeding) to produce enough HCG. If you tested the on or around the 5-9 of November, and your test was negative, then that was most likely not IB. IB can only be confirmed in hind-sight.  It could have been ovulation spotting. Or just mid cycle spotting, which happens.

Since you had a long cycle and do not know when you ovulated, you can only guess on how far along you are. The LMP is only really accurate if you ovulate at or around CD 14 (plus or minus a few days). Tell your Dr that your cycles are not regular. That way they can order a dating U/S and get you are more accurate due date.
    Thank God for Raid.

  • You were probably testing too early. Did you use an early detection test? Had I been testing with a regulat test, I likely still wouldn't know I am pregnant.

I've had several positives and went to the doctor to confirm and get appointments set up. I've been having positives since friday, but his test was negative because the sensitivity of the test they use which is not an early detection test couldn't pick it up.

If you weren't temping then you have no way to know when you ovulated so you may not have been pregnant when you took those first tests. Also, you've left a gap of a few weeks between taking them so who's to say you wouldn't have gotten a BFP much earlier if you had tested. Anyway, the doc will be better able to estimate your DD. Congratulations!!

January siggy challenge - Pregnant lady problems

  • Yes, shade matters, because it tells you how strong your hormone levels are.

No, shade does not matter. The shade of the line is simply related to how much dye is in your hpt. That's it.

    Congrats OP!

    I agree with @ecwk

I'm confused about this. When I first got pregnant I took 4 dollar store tests and one digital. I liked seeing the second line appear, so I enjoyed taking the tests. The first $ store, I got a SUPER faint second line. Like a squinter. I followed up with a digital that clearly said pregnant. Over the next week to week and a half I would occasionally take one to keep convincing myself I was pregnant. All $ store so all same brand same test. As the pregnancy continued the second line kept getting darker and darker until the last test the second line was finally darker than the control. I thought that the intensity of the line often had to do with how much hcg it was detecting?

While that CAN be the case, it isn't always.  I never, ever got a dark line on an HPT, even at 6 weeks pregnant.  The line was never as dark as the control line for me.  And i have a healthy daughter.  They did get a bit lighter, like from squinters at 3.5 weeks to definitely being a line there by 4.5 weeks, but they were never very dark.  It can vary based on concentration of HCG in your urine (will vary based on how hydrated you are when the test is taken) and the amount of dye in that particular batch of tests.

This. I brought a 3 pack of early response. So same batch. My bfp lines did get progressively darker, 11dpo was so faint that by lunchtime i convinced myself i made it up, 12dpo was definite bfp but not dark, 13dpo the test line was darker then control. And i always tested with fmu, so only 1 per day. My sister however,
Tested with different brand tests over a week or so, still usually fmu i think, and the darkness of her lines changed all the time. So the line darkness CAN be a sign of hcg progression, but there are enough differing factors that it should not be taken as a rule, even if you always use the same brand, as they could still be a different batch. (Unless you buy a 3 pack like i did and then high probability of same batch)
