Merlin's Magic sleepsuit

Went to pediatrician today for 3 month visit and she said to transition LO to crib. No more swaddling. I'm assuming meaning no blanket swaddling - can I still use a sleep sack or swaddle sac? I've heard about the Merlin Magic sleepsuit from other posts and am curious do you have LO in pajamas? It looks so warm so I'm not sure. Also my DD likes to sleep with her hands up alongside her head/ears so wondering if she still can or will she be frustrated not being able to do so.

Re: Merlin's Magic sleepsuit

  • I was just about to post about this. My LO is 11 weeks and haven't slept more then 2 hours during the night. A friend recommended the Merlins Magic sleep suit and for the first time last night he slept from 10-3 and I couldn't believe it. And he's an overheater so it always sleeps in a short onies so I was nervous hed get hot. But no! the fabric inside isn't Cotten and keeps the heat out and he says at a good temperature! Going to use it again tonight and hope for the same result!!

  • We have the cotton sleepsuit and I had the same concern about temperature when I bought it. When it was warmer we put our LO in a short sleeve onesie with socks. Now that it's getting colder, we've started putting him in footed pajamas inside the suit. We live in Texas so it's not super cold yet, and he still stays at a comfortable temperature even in the footed pjs. The suit is very breathable!

Also, my LO can move his arms in the suit but it would probably be difficult to put his arms right up by his face/ears, as the material is very padded like a snowsuit and limits his movements a bit. My LO always broke his right arm free in the swaddle and would put it under his chin when sleeping, but he doesn't seem to mind that he can't do that anymore in the sleepsuit. It's hard to say whether that would be a problem for your LO or not, but my son sleeps MUCH better in the sleepsuit than he ever did in the swaddle and I would highly recommend the sleepsuit if your LO is having a hard time transitioning out of the swaddle.
  • @Kelliek327 we actually haven't been doing all that much swaddling lately. She hasn't needed it since she falls asleep pretty quickly on her own. It's funny how her arms pretty much always are up when I check on her. I'm just thinking I would need something since she had been sleeping in the rock n play and the swing and been sort of snuggled into something and not sure how she'd tolerate he open crib. I did try and put her in the crib for a nap once when she fell asleep in my arms. It lasted about. 5 minutes and then she awoke to wailing her arms and body around.
  • @imsoexcited915 Since she's doing ok without the swaddle and the suit is a little expensive, I'd recommend putting her down in the crib a few more times to see how it goes before trying the suit. I know it doesn't always work for everyone and I'd hate for you to spend $40 if you don't really need to. But, if she continues to wake up in the crib I think it definitely would be worth a shot! The suit does a great job muffling the startle reflex and since it is so cozy I think it helps my LO stay relaxed and calm enough so that when he does startle and begin to wake he is easily able to fall back asleep again before completely waking himself. It has been a game changer for us, but I know every baby is different and what works for one doesn't always work for others!
  • If you go with the regular (non-swaddling) sleep sack, there's usually a bit of an adjustment period where they wake themselves up more than they previously did, but in my experience this only lasts a few days.  I like to put them in lightweight footed PJs and a sleeveless fleece sleepsack in the winter (we are in Southern CA, though).

We haven't tried the Magic Sleepsuit, but if you're not supposed to put them in it once they start rolling over, it doesn't seem like a great investment to me.

  • There's a product on Amazon called Swaddle Up...similar concept as the Merlin suit but it's designed for babies who like to sleep with their arms up.
  • I use the Merlin suit and we also use Swaddle Up.  DS likes them both but he prefers the sleep suit.  We keep our house chilly so he wears footed PJs under it.  Is this a thing for pediatricians to comment on?  Serious question.  Mine has never ask about swaddling or told us LO should be in a crib at any point with either boy.  Of course, they ask about sleep to make sure that we are using safe sleep practices but I've never had anyone tell me to move my boys from their bassinet or pack n play and never commented on swaddling before DS could roll over either.

I bought my swaddle up at Buy Buy Baby
  • We use swaddle up and it's been great! My DD could get hands out of halo and miracle.
  • I have swaddle sacks with the Velcro. Would it be sort of the same to swaddle with arms out so DD can have her hands free? @Dot30324 @ElleMF728 wondering if that's similar to the swaddle up and would be ok?
  • Swaddle sacks never worked for us. My Lo loved the swaddle up because he could have his hands up. Once we transitioned to the crib (8 weeks) we put him down in just jammies. After seeing him constantly flailing with his crazy arms waking him up, we got the sleep suit. Best $40 ever spent. He has yet to sleep the entire night but I feel like it helps him get better rest. We put him in it to nap and he sleeps minimum 2 hours. We live in florida and have footed jammies underneath and he is never too warm. The suit compresses their jerky movements so they sleep more soundly.

Its kind of the same idea.  The SwaddleUp slows arm movement while still allowing LO to use her hands to soothe.  Arms up doesn't slow movement but I don't see what you couldn't still use a swaddle sack for her legs. I'll be honest, my pediatrician has never mentioned swaddling to me other than to tell me to stop when they start rolling over. I swaddled DS1 until he was about 4 months old and used sleep sacks after that.
  • @imsoexcited915 we didn't do well with the Velcro swaddles after a few weeks bc she was too strong. I bet you'd like the swaddle up! I want a Merlin but she's almost 3m and have a hard time justifying the cost if they get unswaddled by 4m
  • Thanks so much! I'm going to get the swaddle up tomorrow at BBB since BRU doesn't carry it.
  • can I use the Merlin suit after 4 months?

    I think they make 2 sizes 3-6 and 6-9
  • We tried the sleep suit and ordered the fleece one because we live in Michigan and keep the house at like 67° at night but little man over heated within like 15 minutes. So we returned it… I hope it works well for you though!
  • @SarahEmmons330 I think they make a cotton one too.
  • @bbudden92 You can use the sleepsuit until they are able to roll over in the suit since it is designed for back sleeping. From the reviews I've read, it is harder for the babies to roll over in the suit since it is thicker, so you don't necessarily have to stop using it once they are able to rollover outside of the suit, only once they can roll with the suit on. The website has more details in the FAQ section in you want to read about it there: https://www.magicsleepsuit.com/pages/faq
  • I also use the suit until LO can roll. Then I plan to move to a cozy fleece sleeper. They don't work for every baby, my first liked it but it wasn't a miracle charm. My second is like the babies described on the site. I put him in it and he visibly slows down and calms. I can put him in his suit to hang out before naps and bed, leave him to do something and come back to find him asleep or almost asleep on the floor in the middle of the playroom. He loves it and by this point is it part of a routine that signals sleep.
