Switched formula

Hello so yesterday I switched my baby's formula from enfamil infant to enfamil gentlease .. The reason I switched was that she was having a really bad time pooping she would cry and grunt because she couldn't poop .. But I haven't noticed a difference with the new formula ?? How long does it take to her little body to adapt to the new one ?? She's still kicking and grunting every time she needs to go poop

Re: Switched formula

  • My pediatrician recommends keeping baby on a new formula for at least 7-10 days before deciding how it works. If your baby is having trouble passing stool, has ANY rectal bleeding, is truly constipated-not passing any stool- or seems to be in pain, you should call your doc. Some physicians will recommend small amounts of diluted prune juice to help soften and increase stool frequently (if your baby is over 1 month of age)

  • I would say at least a week. I know it can be hard but it's better to stick it out for a week at least to make sure other variables don't play a factor in contributing to your baby's constipation. You could also try a warm bath with Epsom salt... When my baby was in the same situation my doula recommended that...
  • The bath should be ok if you baby is over 4-6 weeks old.
I wouldn't do it with under that age
  • Our pediatrician said we would know if the formula is good within 3 days. But we have a combo problem of constipation and serious spit up. We have switched formulas 6x now. Babies are still figuring out how to poop and push out gas. My baby was constipated (poops that are formed in a shape are considered constipation) and even had trouble farting. If the texture is fine I wouldn't worry. If it is truly constipation then if gentleease doesn't help in a couple of days, I would suggest asking your ped about enfamil reguline -- it's for soft stools. It has made our poop normal once a day and we are only using it for 1/2 of the bottle. We did use prune juice too per our pediatrician and I'll warn you that made everything including pee smell terrible!

If you are concerned you need to make a trip to your pediatrician. They should also have samples of formula so you don't have to keep purchasing.
  • We had the same issue! Gentlease made the situation worse for us though. Currently on Gerber good start smooth and it works wonders! Plus it is so similar to my breast milk that he barely noticed a difference
  • This might be a silly question, but are you gradually putting her on the Gentlease? We switched my daughter's formula but did it gradually mixing the two formulas and gradually increasing the new and decreasing the old until she was fully on the new. It took us 3 days, but that way it didn't mess up her digestive system since she was already so used to one. My daughter is on Gerber Good Start Gentle for gas and stool issues as well, and it's working wonders.
  • My baby started with enfamil fussy gas and crying & she had trouble pooping. It was so sad so i switched her to enfamil reguline designed for digestive health & soft stools. It seemed to help her within 24hrs
  • My baby' Is not constipated but hate seeing her suffer to poop! So that's why I switched her and it seems to be working she has pooped 2 times with no trouble!
  • If she's not constipated she could just be doing the normal baby thing where they make faces and grunts and groans to get their poops out. Little babies haven't yet figured out how to coordinate the necessary muscles to poop, so it's a bit of a learning curve. Under normal circumstances it just takes some time for them to learn to use their muscles and what they are eating doesn't really play into it.
  • But with the new formula I have noticed today that she pooped with no trouble
  • We are having the same issue. My doctor said the same thing about them learning to poop and pass gas. Our little guy grunts etc when he's trying to pas gas. He's not constipated bc his stools are coming out fine and not hard. he also doesn't have stool once a day sometimes it's every other day which is ok per our Ped
  • We tried Gentlease also but saw little improvement and ultimately had to switch to soy (my daughter had to be on soy when she was a baby also).  Soy does increase the likelihood of constipation, but a little prune juice in the bottle can help.  I liked the Gerber formula's because they had probiotics in the formula, but the soy formula doesn't so we bought the probiotic drops to add to a bottle a day.  My baby finally smiles now that we have worked out most of those issues.  You can also get glycerin suppositories for babies...that was a huge help for my daughter.  My son hasn't had any constipation yet, but about 25-30% of his feedings are expressed breastmilk and I think that has helped also.
  • What formula did you end up using.. Having same issue here. Happy baby but spits up so much! Tried switching to a milk based formula and it was horrible ( we have been using Similac soy) I give him a premixed bottle once a day and that seems to keep his poop regular but I'm at a loss as to what to do about the spitting up.
