Visitor with a question..

Hi all, just stopping through from TTC with a question for a friend. She is 11 weeks and had blood work 3 weeks ago and an ultrasound. Everything looked good. She was supposed to schedule more blood work for this week and forgot. When they called to make an appointment, they asked her to go in for another ultrasound along with it. I don't remember having 2 ultrasounds in the 1st trimester and neither does she (we both already have 1 child, mine is 5 hers is 4). Is this a new thing? Two ultrasounds in the 1st tri? Her appointment isn't until tomorrow and she's really anxious. Thank you!

Re: Visitor with a question..

  • I really wouldn't worry. I had about 4 US in the 1st tri. Sometimes it is because they can't get a good look the first time or because the baby is in a tough position for doppler to get the heartbeat. For me, I have an excess of tummy pudge so the only way to monitor the baby's heart was through US since doppler couldn't reach. I would tell her to relax and try not to worry. If her doctor sees anything worrisome, they will let her know, but many times an US is just another chance to get a closer peek at how everything is developing and not necessarily a sign that something is wrong.

  • It sounds to me like they're going to do an NT (nuchal translucency) Scan ultrasound, which is optional but accompanies the first trimester blood work to screen for Downs and Trisomy 13, 18, & 21 and is typically scheduled between 11-13 weeks I believe. In the ultra sound they will look for two key markers - the presence of a nasal bone and they measure the fluid in the neck. The doctor will use these markers and the blood work to determine a risk ratio for these chromosomal abnormalities.

If your friend doesn't want this test, she doesn't have to do it. I personally wanted to have it so that I would know if there were any issues. It was one of our favorite appointments because we got to see our LO moving all around looking more like a person and less like the pulsing blob from our first ultrasound.

    Hope that helps!
  • I think every doctor/practice is different. I had two ultrasounds in the first tri, one at 8 weeks and one at 10 weeks, which is standard for the practice I go to.  Doppler only at 14 weeks, and then a full anatomy scan u/s scheduled for 20 weeks.

  • Thanks ladies! @LadySamLady that sounds right because she is having the blood work drawn looking for the same thing. Guess well find out for sure tomorrow ☺

  • @vinerie  That is the exact same schedule my doctor recommended also.

I have had 2 ultrasounds already (1 at 8 weeks and one at 11, accompanied by blood work). I go tomorrow for doppler and my routine annual exam. I will have another US at 20 weeks for the anatomy scan, but we already know what we're having because we found out from the Harmony test we had a few weeks ago. I don't think the multiple ultrasounds are anything to be worried about. From the new moms I have talked to recently, it seems to be the standard in many practices.
  • I've had three so far and I'm 14 weeks. My dr did one at 8 and 10 weeks, then I opted for the genetic testing and blood work. My sis is also expecting and is 11 weeks and has had 3 as well with another practice. I think they like the money and I like to see the baby so it's even. Haha tell your friend good luck! I'm sure it's fine.
  • I had 2.  One at my very first appointment (I think I was 8 weeks--still looked like a blob) to determine due date and one at my 12 week appointment (actually looked like a baby!) to do measurements and such to rule out problems or disorders like down syndrome--can't remember what they called that test.  I think it's normal at my OB office to do 2.
