Worried after Nuchal Translucency

I was just wondering if anyone has had this---I had a miscarriage last year and got pregnant through imsemination in September. I'm now 11 weeks. I had the nuchal test today and the fluid was measuring a 4.2. The doctor said he wants us to see a genetic counselor on Thursday and have non-invasive blood work. He feels that it will most likely go away, though he did tell us our chance of Downs Syndrome is 1 in 3 at this point. The ultrasound tech, however, felt something was wrong. I'm just wondering if anyone can share any advice, or if anyone had this happen. Any information would be great--thank you so much.

  • I'm sorry I don't have any info but I'm hoping for the best outcome for you and baby!

  • Sorry I don't have any experience with this, but I would definitely move toward a more sensitive test to find out for sure. I was told the NT test is only about 85% sensitive so thennon-invasive blood tests are going to be more accurate. (I sell lab testing could talk about sensitivity all day long.) Best of luck to you as I understand what it's like to have infertility and then finally become pregnant.

  • I'm sorry you got this news :-( that is a high reading, I think anything over 3 is considered high risk for Down's syndrome. However, there is also still a chance you are carrying a perfectly healthy baby. I'm guessing you will most likely be recommended to have an amnio- which will definitely provide more insight. Best of luck to you and your LO
  • Hope everything turns out well for you and your LO!

  • I go next Monday for my test.  I had to send in 5 blood spot samples last week so they could process the samples and have the results for my appointment.  I am very nervous already.  There's no risk factors (other than my age) right now but I am still worried about results.  I have heard that the results are not 100% accurate and the follow-up testing is more thorough.  Sending luck and prayers your way.
  • Sorry you are going through this.  FX for you- hopefully the blood work comes back that you are both healthy.

The good news is that you are still pregnant.  We found out about our miscarriage last time at the NT scan- so I'm super anxious about going in for it on the 16th.  Downs is not what any of us want to hear- but at least it isn't a death sentence.  My husband's grandmother's brother has Down- and he can be alot for grandma to handle sometimes- but he is still so capable and has such an impressive memory.

  • I'm so sorry you're going through this.  As mentioned, the NT scan is only 85% reliable.  The blood work will tell you so much more.

While the tech is trained to see potential problems.  The doctor is trained to know more about nuances and when concern is really necessary.

  • Were they able to see a nasal bone during the ultrasound? My tech said the presence of a nasal bone is a good sign as few babies born with Down Syndrome are born with one.

FX for good blood work results. I'll keep you in my thoughts.

  • Thanks everyone, I appreciate the thoughts and prayers very much. This board has been a huge comfort.

GinnyJ, the doctor did not say anything about the nasal bone and at the time I wasn't thinking to ask, I didnt know, but on the ultrasound picture they gave me there seems to be a very clearly defined nose, so I'm not sure.
  • Good luck. Thoughts and prayers coming your way! Keep us posted on how everything trns out.
