Induction for high blood pressure.

Well today I was told since my blood pressure is high they were going to induce me. They just started the pill to dilate and soften my cervix not too long ago. They plan on starting pitocin once that kicks in. Does anyone have any advice on the whole being induced thing..

    Lurking...

I had 2 inductions but I think the process is more or less about how you and the baby respond.

I had cervadil w/ my first induction around 7pm, contractions started about 3am and I had DS at 3pm.  I got the epi around 7 or 8 am, I think.  The process went very smooth.

The 2nd induction, I was already 3 almost 4 so I came in the morning, they gave me the epi first, had pitocin and had DD around 3pm.  That was a very smooth process.

They broke my water with both when I was about 7 or 8 cm.

    Good luck!

  • My induction story was not as successful as pp but good luck! Try to relax & rest when you can.
So exciting your lo will be here soon!!
  • I've had three inductions, #1 was a train wreck but #'s 2 and 3 were awesome. I have a detailed account of #3's induction on the birth stories sticky thread.

Inductions can be rough without the epi since the contractions come clustered so close together and so strong. If you think you want the drugs, my advice is to ask for them when you start to get uncomfortable, not to wait until it's unbareable. I intended to go unmedicated with all three - #'s 1 & 2 I tapped out when I just couldn't handle contractions spaced less than a minute apart. #3 I got to thirty seconds apart and I *begged* for the epi but couldn't get it because the contractions were too close together. I made it through and once I started pushing I was just fine but I had thirty or forty minutes where I was pretty sure the world was collapsing around me (and I had no pitocin onboard this time, just Cervadil) Everyone is different, though, and everyone handles and reacts to pitocin and the cervical ripeness differently. My body just does cascading contractions (which are a wicked bitch).

Things to keep in mind that I wish I knew with my first induction:

    - they CAN turn down or stop the pitocin. They will tell you they don't like to or don't want to but you ALWAYS have the right to say you want it cranked down or turned off. They shut it off completely with labor #2 once it was established and I had my standard cascading contractions start up and my body kept going (and if your contractions slow down, they can slowly increase up to where you need it to be to continue laboring)

    - you CAN tell them NOT to artificially rupture your membranes. It may make your labor last a little longer to wait for them to go in their own but once your water breaks you are on a clock so discuss your options and the doctors reasons for wanting or suggesting breaking your water. No need to just break them out of custom at three centimeters dilated if you're progressing normally (unless you want them to)

    - you can and should ask questions about the steps of the induction process and if something doesn't sound or feel right you can decline it.

Good luck!!! I hope the process is smooth and uneventful (well, except for the birth of your child  that's always exciting!)

  • Best of luck to you! I see my Dr. Tomorrow and think I will be scheduling my induction due to high blood pressure as well. Hopefully your little man arrives soon!
  • @paigeivey mine was 90/60 the first 6 months and has crept up the past 2. Speedy (but not too speedy) delivery wishes!
