Floating?

So I guess the "new thing" in Nashville is to do floating. Anyone heard of this?? The description is: “Laying in this highly buoyant water takes away strain on spines and gives relief to sore backs and joints,” says Grimes. “Stress melts away. Swelling is reduced. Need sleep? An hour of sleep in the tank is equal to four hours, and just being out of gravity leaves people feeling deeply rested. Floating has been proven to help other common conditions of pregnancy such as depression and anxiety by decreasing cortisol levels and encouraging the production of endorphins,”....You float in a 8 ft tub with 1000 lbs of epsom salt (wouldn't that dehydrate you??) in the dark for an hour. Apparently to do this is $69. Any other "weird" or new methods of pg self care anyone interested in doing??

Re: Floating?

  • I've heard of those, I think, but I didn't realize there was so much salt! If the concentration of salt is higher in the water than in your body then yes, it would pull water out of your body by way of osmosis. I'm going to find more information!

  • @JessicaB0627 the place that does it in Nashville (closest to me) has a big long FAQ. It's called Float Nashville (if you can't find a salon near you). It says pg women get the most out of it bc it relieves any pressure you have in your back and joints. It says it's impossible to drown (apparently you sleep in there for an hour which is equivalent to 4 hours to your body) bc of the amount of salt in there. I think it sounds neat but I'm skeptical.

  • @doozer1345 So all I was really able to find on the dehydration front is that Epsom salt is different than normal table salt and will not dehydrate you. I guess I know nothing about Epsom salt! It sounds pretty neat though. I think I've heard them called sensory deprivation tanks. I'm not sure if I would be able to lay in one and actually relax, though.
  • I may try it for the hell of it. I'll report back.

I don't soak in anywhere near that amount, but for my fibromyalgia I take an Epsom salt bath twice a day with essential oils in it for pain (pregnancy has alleviated my symptoms so I'm not doing this now, but I will once baby is here and my symptoms return). Epsom salt soak baths are INCREDIBLE for pain management and just being in the water is great on your joints as I do aquatic physical therapy as well. Never heard of this floating, but there's my two cents on Epsom salt :)
  • I saw this on the news a while back, looks so cool!
