Exercising a few days before getting "cleared"

Ladies, I am going crazy. Which is prob why I am even considering this. But I need endorphins.

Have any of you braved a workout before getting the ok from your dr? I know you guys are going to think I am an idiot, but I am seriously in need of a pick me up, and exercise does it for me. Just taking an informal poll, and I'll use my best judgment so no snark pls!

I should mention that my 6 week appt is on Tuesday; I had a vaginal delivery with 2nd degree tears and at 3 weeks I went in to get checked out and all looked good.

Re: Exercising a few days before getting "cleared"

  • Just stay away from abdominal stuff until you're cleared. If you have DR it could lead to a hernia and you want to make sure that doesn't happen!
  • Go for a nice long walk! I'm 3 weeks PP and have been going on walks everyday to help with my stir craziness and horrible body image I currently have. Should get you through today!

  • I had an appointment at 3 weeks and got cleared to start doing brisk walking leading up to running as long as I start slow and work up. I wouldn't do more than walking/running before getting cleared though
  • I'm really into spinning and was thinking of hitting up Soulcycle but childcare fell through so I guess the universe is trying to tell me something!!

I might pack up the baby and take a walk...maybe that will make me feel better.

I really feel like I am losing it with these 20lbs. They just won't budge and normally I shed weight very quickly!!

Are you running now? Just curious what your plan is? Not a runner but I do enjoy it- thinking of adding running to my repertoire :)

  • I had my appointment at 5 weeks and got cleared to exercise. I would go for it. Just start slowly and listen to your body!

I'm not a runner but I did a 5k with my dad, SO, and son two years ago and preparing for that (for literally three weeks...I don't recommend that lol) made me realize running is just as relaxing if not more than walking for me. I did use to run a mile once a week up until a few months before getting pregnant and I really want to get in the habit of running at least a mile a few times a week.
  • I'm at 3 weeks PP & I've been walking up hill pushing the stroller and walking around the block. It feels great to get out of the house. As long as you didn't have any major issues delivering you should be okay .
  • I worked out 4 days after delivery! I had a vaginal delivery, no tears but I needed to start moving, I say listen to your body. I should say that I worked out all the way through my pregnancy, but just be safe and take it slow! Good luck!
  • I had a c-section and started walking on pp day 5. My body would let me know when j was pushing it so I just followed how I was feeling. I was a little afraid of going back to running because I would occasionally get a twinge of pain from my internal incision when I sneezed or coughed, but one day when I was crossing a road, a car was coming so I instinctively started to run and it didn't hurt. I decided to start slow and hopped in my treadmill at 5 weeks pp. and while I was way slower than my normal pace, it felt great! The bigger concern pain wise now is wrangling my breastfeeding boobs! These girls were always big, but now they are bigger and HEAVY!
  • Ok ladies update! 45 min on the stairclimber at a moderate pace and I feel human again! No bleeding so far, which is crazy bc I started to bleed yesterday after grocery shopping :) I'm hoping to keep this up and burn off these 20 lbs!

This exactly for me too. I stopped running at 35 weeks and started again at 4 days post delivery. With my last pregnancy (#3), I had to stop running at 27 weeks and started again at 12 days without asking my doctor. I knew I would stop if the bleeding became heavier, but it didn't. He was not the least bit scolding or concerned when I told him. This time (#4), I asked my doctor ahead of time how soon I could start and he said as soon as I felt ready. I also REALLY needed the endorphins to fight the baby blues in that first week and it helped tremendously. My 8 year old (#2) - who ran most of my pregnancy with me - and I just did a 5k on Thanksgiving morning. I still have a long way to go to get back to my peak, but it has felt great to get out there. As long as you listen to your body, I think it is fine. Good luck!

  • When I was discharged from the hospital I was told I could go for walks as soon as I felt able and after 2 weeks I could begin light exercise/low impact cardio. It was actually encouraged! I was just told to avoid heavy weights and abdominal exercises. I had a repeat csection.
