Very confused and frustrated

My baby cries almost all day long every day. It seems like if she's not sleeping, she's crying. Her pediatrician put her on Zantac for acid reflux and it's doing nothing. I had an x-ray and gi test done to make sure everything was okay there and it came back fine. Now the pediatrician is trying to put her on a stronger medicine for acid reflux and I'm not sure why. I just don't understand why he thinks it's acid reflux or if he's just guessing becuase he doesn't know what's wrong. Im breastfeeding and when I had my baby in the hospital I asked a lactation consultant what foods I should be avoiding and they told me I can eat whatever I wanted. Well I've heard different from the nurse at the pediatrician office and I've looked up online what foods to avoid and it's like you can't eat anything. One site says something completely different than other site. Not sure what I should and shouldnt eat. I feel like maybe my baby is gassy and her bellys just bothering her. Maybe from what I'm eating? I'm just so frustrated and don't know what to think. Definitely calling my pediatrician tomorrow but any help would be appreciated. My baby is 11 weeks old.

  • What does her stool look like? The first sign of a milk protein allergy will show up in her poop. Have you tried gripe water? Mommys bliss is good. I know some swear by chiropractics

  • Her poop looks kind of green like. How would I know if it's a milk allergy? I've tried little remedies gripe water and gas drops. Feel like they don't do anything.
  • My LO can't handle cows milk proteins and when I cut dairy out of my diet her poop went from green and runny to a thicker golden color. It's worth a shot to cut it out of your diet and see what happens. Give it at least a week though. I think it takes a while to fully leave your system.
  • So if I cut out cows milk, how do I make sure we r both getting our calcium? Did you get lactose and fairy free milk? And I guess it confuses me too because I thought cows milk was suppose to help with milk supply
  • Could totaly be dairy allergy. I cut all dairy out. Little to no cheese. No yogurt. I use almond milk in my cereal or oatmeal and just in case she has a allergy to soy, I get coffees made with rice, coconut or almond milk. You can get calcium from other foods. I seriously just eat whatever. Expect dairy. Don't stress yourself out about this. My first had a reaction to dairy so I knew going into this one I might have to cut dairy and sure enough she was grassy and her poop green and mucusy. It takes a little but for dairy to leave your system so just know this isn't a quick fix.
FYI. So delicious makes a coconut ice cream. Great substitute if you have a sweet tooth.

I use almond milk in cereal, coffee, etc. I also try to get calcium from plant sources such as leafy greens, broccoli, & almonds, to name just a few. If you are concerned about your supply, certain foods such as oatmeal are good for boosting it. Some people also swear by a Gatorade a day.
  • There are different types of acid reflex medication. Zantac seems to be the go to at first. It's relatively safe and has lower risk of side effects. It essentially works by reducing histamine in the stomach and thereby reducing the amount of acid in the stomach, that way when a baby does spit up, they don't irritate their esophagus. If that isn't working, your doctor could try another drug such as Prilosec which inhibits protein pumps and therefore also reduces stomach acid. From what I've read, Prilosec is stronger but also can have more side effects. Think of it like allergy medication. They are used to treat allergies but they often work in different ways.

As for why your pediatrician is doing this, no one can tell you but your pediatrician. It's probably something you should ask every time some prescribes your LO medication, along with what side effects the drugs have.

I also have heard different stories about what should be avoided while breast feeding. Some say milk, others garlic and mint (due to their strong flavors), others say nuts and soy, others spicey foods. I'd ask your pediatrician if they suspect it's a food allergy or aversion first before drastically changing your diet.

  • Drinking cows' milk has no effect on your milk supply. That's an old wives' tale.
  • I wouldn't say my LO has an allergy, but her constant spitting up and uncomfortable gassiness got so much better when I gave up dairy. I bought soy milk and I think it does the same unfortunately!
  • My baby doesn't spit up. That's the thing..Everytime someone talks about acid reflux they ask me if she's spitting up. She does not. And I have put a call into my pediatrician, just thought any help I could get would be appreciated.

Babies can still have silent reflux where they have reflex, it just doesn't manifest into spitting up.

Your baby is crying and babies don't usually cry without a reason. Sometimes with medicine you have to keep trying until something sticks. I wasn't trying to be snippy when I suggest you speak with your pediatrician. As for advice on here, it's good but we don't know your babies personal medical background or what other steps your have taken with him. Hopefully his doctor does and can better advise you. :)

  • My first son had silent reflux. He wasn't spitting up but the acid was still moving up his esophagus. He cried all the time, except when he was sleeping. The Zantac eventually worked but it took a week or so, I believe. And then he was a different baby. Good luck, I hope you get some answers soon!

We do tummy massages and bicycle legs when our LO gets really fussy and we think it's gas. Works everytime. Sometimes I do it after she eats before she gets fussy. I don't recall the website but it was British if you google it. basically go from the breast bone down to just below the belly button and then out to each side with your thumbs with gentle pressure. Also go clockwise with your hands from the same starting position, also applying gentle pressure. I usually sing her favorite songs while I do this. Only difficulty is you must wait for baby to calm down some so their tummy is not tight. Hope you find relief for your LO. best of luck!
  • My baby was similar until I cut out dairy at 8 weeks. Her mood and crying improved DRASTICALLY after that.

I'm now certain it's an allergy. There was some milk in some of the Thanksgiving food (ex., milk in mashed potatoes) and she's had runny greenish poop with some mucus in it and is super super gassy (I'm talking about 30-40 + loud gas passes a day).

It takes a couple weeks for milk to clear out of your system. Eliminate ALL dairy (read labels) for a couple weeks and see what happens.
  • My baby was crying about 80 percent of the time he was awake (while he wasn't eating) from about 3 -7 weeks. He wasn't spitting up either but seemed to be in pain and we assumed it was gas pains. We tried everything and the only thing that seemed to make a difference was probiotic drops. He still cries but now it's more like 25 percent of his awake time, which is much easier to deal with. The ones I have are called Gerber soothe colic drops, they are expensive but I'm afraid to stop using them. You might want to ask your doc about trying them if you haven't already.
  • It could also possibly be an imbalance of foremilk/hindmilk. Do you have an oversupply of milk? That's what happened to me and my baby's poop was green and frothy. Not sure if this relates to you at all, but it did cause my baby to cry non-stop.
