Hip Displaysia and Pavlik Harness

Just curious if anyone has a LO going through treatments for DDH. My sweet boy was breech and upon examination before being discharged from the hospital we found out that he would need an ultrasound to check on his hips. The ultrasound confirmed that he has DDH and 2 days ago, a day shy of 4 weeks, he was fitted with the Pavlik Harness. It breaks my heart to see him like this but know the earlier the treatment the better the outlook. We have another ultrasound in 3 weeks to see if the harness is doing what it should and if not we move onto an open reduction and casts. Fingers crossed we don't have to go that route. Looking to hear some experience. Talk with someone who is going through this as well, hear about your treatment plans.

This is so sad people keep making and using cheap baby carriers that can cause this! It'd be bad enough to have it congenital.

  • My LO doesn't have this but a friends boy did. He was in his harness a few months (she EBF too). He's 1 now and walks and runs completely normally. Good luck!
  • My niece was breech too and had dysplasia and the harness. It was on a few months and totally healed her. They used leg warmers to make dressing her easier.
  • I don't have any experience yet but my LO has her ultrasound tomorrow as she was also breech so I very well may be about to go through the same thing :(

I've got my fingers crossed that you guys have a clean scan. How old is your LO? Does she have stiff hips? We had a really hard time diapering our little boy at first. His legs were basically locked together. We were also diagnosed with Torticollis, which frequently go hand in hand from what I understand. At this time our treatment for that is neck stretches we do with him 5+ times per day. I'll be thinking of you. Please let me know how your scan goes.

  • What do the neck stretches look like.

The neck stretches are the physio for the torticollis, with a hand on one shoulder we have to pull his head In one direction, ear to shoulder (like your looking at something that's sideways) and then turn his head, chin to shoulder (as if your trying to look over your shoulder) in the other direction. Each stretch lasts about 20 seconds, we have to do them 3 times each, at least 5 times a day. Sometimes he handles it really well, sometimes, not so much.

Just back from the scan and it wasn't good news, she does have hip dysplasia. She's 4 weeks old btw. Ultrasound tech said we would get an appointment asap to get her harness fitted but I've no idea how long she's going to be in it yet, guess we'll know more after her consultant appointment. It's all a bit overwhelming right now. I'm worried about her getting colic in the harness because she suffers quite bad with wind already and everything I've been reading online says winding them in a harness is a nightmare. How have you found it?
  • @mollypuss1 I am sorry to hear that the scan didn't go so great. My LO was fit for the Pavlik the day before he was 4 weeks, which was only on Wednesday. We haven't even made it a week with the brace yet. The day they get fitted is the hardest on you. They told me to expect a fussy baby for a day or two while he adjusted but it didn't seem to phase him. It was much harder on me. I was very emotional that day and regret not asking more questions regarding his condition. I don't know if he is considered a mild, moderate or severe case. I plan on asking a lot more when we go back this coming Wednesday to see the nurse. 3 weeks after our initial appointment we go for another ultrasound to see how the harness is working (fingers crossed that it is!) and then they should be able to give us a better timeline of how long he will be in it. As of now they told us anywhere from 6-12 weeks full time then weaning and only wearing at night for at least 4 weeks. We are in the harness 24/7 which is tricky. He is a puker so he now lives in a bib trying to keep it from getting on the shoulder straps of the harness and he only gets sponge baths. Clothes still seem to fit, but now the 0-3 month clothes are fairly tight and we wears onesies and pants, I think if we were to do sleepers we would have to go up a size. Diaper changes and breastfeeding has been a bit of a challenge but we are adjusting. I found a good support group on fb that is good (hip Displaysia in babies (clicky hips or CDH, DDH). There is a lot of knowledge on there. Someone said something that seemed to help me wrap my head around it all. Our babies spend 9 months cramped up in the womb, then they are born and a whole new world of movements open up, then they are put in the harness and to them, it's only the next step of life. They don't know that it's not the normal. It would be nice to keep in touch as we go through this. It's nice to have someone to talk to that's in the same boat.

  • Sorry for the delay getting back to you, I've had issues getting the app to load.

Thanks for the info on how it's going for you, it's reassuring to know that your LO is coping well. We have out consultant appointment on Tuesay to get her harness fitted so I'll make sure to ask then about how mild/severe her case is also. I've no idea how long she's going to be in it yet. My LO isn't too bad for spitting up but she does have a tendency to have explosive poops so that should be fun if they get on the harness :(
  • I suffered from this myself as a baby, I'm now 20 and it's never been an issue since, i was scared I would have issues giving birth naturally but I managed, I was very young when I had my brace and considering it was 20 years ago I'm sure he will be totally fine, they will have mastered it by now
