DS is "uninsurable" - long

I have been in hysterics for two days now. ?DH got laid off and we can't afford Cobra. ?I've been fighting with Blue Cross for 2 1/2 months to get him insured and they denied him!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ?After all the medical records they asked for, it finally came down to the fact that he had at RSV at 2 weeks old. ?He's "uninsurable with that history for 2 years". ?I was hysterical about it because they told me the only thing holding up the process was a rash he'd had under his eye. ?The?pediatrician?and obstetrician had to write letters to explain that he was fine and the only problem was a collection of moisture. ?The final due date for Cobra was last week and I called Blue Cross three times last week and they kept saying they just had to read the papers from the doctor and that he would be cleared. ?So we let the date pass. ?Then yesterday, they finally admitted that he was not going to be insured, too bad. ?The supervisor that I finally started yelling and crying at explained that he had no idea why they had made do all that work, gathering medical records and faxing information and getting special letters from doctors if they were NEVER going to clear him. ?He's writing a letter to the Cobra administrator to take?responsibility?for the error and hopefully get me in to Cobra but the fact still remains. ?We can't pay Cobra. ?I'm so upset and scared and horrified that I have insurance, DH has insurance, but DS doesn't. ?I'm calling other insurance companies now to find out if their underwriting guidelines are the same but I'm getting a lot of run around. ?I just feel so completely freaked out about this. ?Anyone work for an insurance company and can give me some advice? ?A long vent, sorry!

  • Oh my I am so sorry. I can't even imagine how you are feeling right now.

I would try to get him on Medicaid. Is that a possibility?

  • No advice, but just wanted to say I'm sorry you have to go through this.  How stressful :(  I hope it works out soon.
  • Hi!

Unfortunately, I cannot offer any advice but just wanted to lend my support.
The whole situation just sucks. Sorry you are going through this and hope you get things worked out soon.

  • Have you looked into Medicaid/Access Cards?

I'm not sure what state you are in, but PA has a thing called CHIPS, that insures all kids, no matter what from my understanding.  Maybe your state has something like that??

  • Check with your state agencies. I didn't look at what state you were in, but I know in Wisconsin children can get insured with Badgercare....your state may have a similar program!!!

  • I agree w/ pp.  Indiana has a program that insures all children.

  • I'm so sorry to hear about that.  Honey I was going through the same thing a few weeks ago.  DS was not eligable for coverage through BCBS either because he takes synagis shots for RSV!  Sucks!  I wanted to do the right thing by paying for health insurance vs going to the government for services but due to my son being on shots to prevent RSV he can not get coverage on our own.  WE are so fortunate that DH works for the school system so I am able to get on his plan, but we are going to need to figure out a way to pay for the insurance due to it cost a lot more than we were paying.  Good Luck.  I couldn't even get temporary insurance for ds :o(  I do find a bit of pleasure due to my husbands health insurance is BCBS so the sob's are going to still pay for the freaking synagis shots, heck yeah!

  • You are in CA right??

You might look into this.  I didn't look at in detail but it says low cost insurance for children and teens who don't qualify.

  • I'm so sorry.  Insurance companies are the absolute worst!

I was also going to recommend to see if California has something equivelant to this

  • here is a link to information on the State Children's Health Insurance Program. you should be able to get coverage for him.

    https://www.cms.hhs.gov/home/schip.asp

  • Ditto to pp...We also have state paid programs for infants that will not get turned down for whatever reason. You should look into seeing if yalls have something similar

  • That totally sucks. I know how you feel. DD is uninsurable for life. She will NEVER be able to get private health insurance. We have her on COBRA and pay about $300 per month.

I would check Healthy Families if you haven't already.?

  • I'm shocked that they would find him uninsurable due to RSV?!  90% of babies under 2 years get it.  That's ridiculous.  Is there not a way to fight it?  What a pain and stress for you guys!!
  • Check this out. https://www.healthyfamilies.ca.gov/hfhome.asp

We have a similar program in Pennsylvania and in many ways it's much better than most regular insurances. And, at least here, there are no income reqiurements - nobody makes too much or too little to insure their kids.

  • I am so so sorry. The only thing I can say is just keep looking and don't give up.

I know how stressful it is.. Luckily in MI, BCBS does not deny anyone.. I was denied by everyone else because 1 stupid doctor diagnosed me with R. Arthritis.. turns out it was stress and all the tests showed that I did NOT have it. Even w/ multiple doctors' notes and medical tests, still no insurance would accept me! It's freaking ridiculous!!!!!! I don't think global healthcare (or whatever the term) is the solution, but something HAS to be done about this! We wouldn't qualify for anything.. so if we move out of state I guess I'm just screwed?? Anyway, sorry, this turned into my own vent.. but just know you're not alone. I hope everything works out for you!

  • Call the CA Insurance Dept and complain.  Write a letter to the CA Insurance Dept and explain that you were unfairly and unnecessarily delayed which led to your child being considered uninsurable.  When you write the letter copy Blue Cross and COBRA on it to the attention of the General Counsels.  Contact the CA Consumer Protection Agency and explain what happened - they may be able to help as well.
  • I have no advice but wanted to tell you that I'm sorry you are going through this.
  • Ugh! I HATE Blue Cross!! I have had nothing but problems with them since the day DS was born. I am constantly calling them. They probably know me by name by now. We are switching insurances as soon as we get all DS shots out of the way.?
