Trying to Get Pregnant

My ovulation tests keep saying negative!

Hey Everyone!  I'm a little confused and I wonder if anyone else has had similar issues.  I have been tracking my cycles for years now using the WomanLog App and for the past couple of months I have been using the GLOW App.  I have longer cycles averaging about 32 to 34 days in length.  My husband and I are TTC and my WomanLog App which "knows" my system really well now said I would have ovulated on Nov. 27th and the GLOW App says my highest fertility day is today.  Well I have been using the ClearBlue Easy Read ovulation test to see when I'm ovulating and they keep coming up negative.  Has anyone else had similar experiences with ovulation tests and still conceived?  We have been doing the deed every other day for the past week so that we don't miss the day but now I'm getting worried that maybe I ovulated super early or something.  UHG.  Timing ovulation seems to be pretty tricky!

The best way to know you ovulated is to temp, I recommend you start that next cycle if you don't conceive.

Honestly, some women never turn an ovulation test. I don't have any experience with this particular brand, but others here do. Maybe try a different brand next month.

And while some of us here are TFAS, not everyone here has been pregnant, so asking for similar experiences that results in a pregnancy here is not the best idea, you will have better luck on the 1st trimester board.

    A few suggestions:

    1) Read Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni W - lots of great info about your cycles me helpful resources

    2) Buy a basal body thermometer and starting tracking your temps - the book will give more details about how/why this is important

    3) Ditch the apps you're using and download Fertility Friend instead. Put your temps in there. Do the tutorials, they're really helpful.

    4) I don't have personal experience on those ovulation tests, but the search box may reveal more discussions about them.

  • You can have multiple LH surges a cycle (meaning more than one positive OPK days/weeks apart) or not turn a OPK positive at all though you do O. This can be because you missed the surge (testing in the morning when your surge is short and starts late afternoon) or because you simply don't turn the test positive due to having a slightly lower level than what the test measured. I would absolutely start temping to confirm O and download Fertility Friend!
  • I used Glow before I got Fertility friend and I was AMAZED at how much better FF was. Temping and FF are seriously life savers.  Good luck!
  • FWIW, I've never turned an OPK and I was ovulating regularly.
  • Agree with everything PPs said, are you only testing once a day? Temping is for sure a more definitive way of confirming O.
  • Are you using advance Clear blue ovulation that says low, high or peak fertility? Or the other that just says positive or negative? Ive used the CB advance and it will give me a peak but even then I usually get more than one peak because I have multiple surges. I didn't figure this out till I started temping, but with that brand you need to use your FMU. I also use Wondfos because they're a lot cheaper and I found them to work better with afternoon or evening urine. However like PPs said, some ppl don't turn any of them positive. Temping is the best the way to know what's going on, I recommend it, its the best way to know when or if you're ovulating.

  • I've never been able to turn an OPK positive, so I stopped doing that after the first month. But I started temping and using FF, and it's amazing! I know I'm ovulating and when, so I feel much more relaxed with the whole TTC process.
  • I've never used digital opks but I've used Internet cheapies on and off for years. Some cycles I get clear positives, some not.

If I don't get a positive though, I can usually still see the lines getting. Ever so slightly darker and this does correspond with ovulation as confirmed by temping. It's not a fail safe method and it's not how the tests are meant to be used, but it works for me. Maybe try some cheaper test strips next cycle. Another advantage is you can start them earlier in your cycle and test more than once a day so you don't miss anything. At the end of the day, opks don't work for everyone.

If you track fertile cm, that is caused by estrogen, not LH so you might have more luck.
  • Thanks everyone!  Looks like with all your suggestions I am going to start charting my temp! And I will try Fertility Friend! :)  I tested twice today too and I still didn't get a positive.

@beachbunnyxo123 I am testing twice a day. I test when I wake up in the morning and again when a get home from anytime between 3 and 10pm depending on the day.

@kcolly32 I am using the ClearBlue Easy Read with the Smiley face or the blank circle.  I haven't gotten any smiley faces. :(  But maybe I did O and it just didn't show or I wasn't testing at the right time.

@JournoGrl23 That makes me feel a little better to know that some people just don't have positive tests.  It seems that lots of people are suggesting charting my temp so I think I will start that.

Thank you again everyone for all your information!  It's a huge help and relief to talk to others who are in the same boat as me in some way or another.  You all are great!  Good luck on your journeys!!
