Need Advice!! Husband/ food aversions

Hi! I'm 10 weeks and have been having awful all day sickness for weeks! I'm on diclegis now and feeling much better. Now I only get sick if I get to hot or certain strong smells. Well the absolute worst of the smells/ food aversions is chicken. Specifically fried chicken/ chicken tenders. That just happens to be my favorite food and even though he knows it makes me sick he still eats and multiple times a week! Tonight I asked him to please stop eating it until my morning sickness passes and he said no and got mad at me!! I haven't asked him to not eat anything else so I don't feel I'm being unreasonable! Any advice?? P.s. He has been so good and helpful until about a week ago and now it's like he is so frustrated by any little thing that unconvinced him. I just don't know what to do. Anybody else going through anything similar?

Re: Need Advice!! Husband/ food aversions

  • I understand both sides here especially since I was going on week 6 of constant nausea until I got on Diclegis. I was literally useless to my kids and DH. I felt like shit and everything made me gag or feel even worse. I feel like my DH put up with a lot! I think one night when he spent a long time making us a really nice dinner that I ate one bite of and turned green it REALLY annoyed him. I sat him down the next day and said how much I appreciated his hard work and doing so much when I could not, and that calmed the waters a bit. Maybe in the moment he was just fed up! From what you say he has been really good about stuff...perhaps it was just a moment of him feeling like no matter what he does it's not right. Maybe approach it again while also mentioning how greatful you are for all the things he has done for you, so he knows it's not unnoticed! Good luck! Feel better!

  • Coffee. I love coffee to death, right away the smell of my beloved chocolate silk folgers made me violently ill. I did have to ask my dad to stop brewing it for awhile and he has. Dh has gI've up a few things for now as well.it sucks, but the 1st trimester is hard.

I understand your h is probably frustrated, but you're giving your body up for 9 months and many more if you decide to nurse. I think he can give up chicken for 13/14 weeks. Hope you feel better soon.

  • Smells affect me more than anything. So I decided to use good smells to my advantage. I got a few Yankee candles in scents I didn't think I'd get tired of and I'll rotate which ones I use. It especially helps for post dinner smells. I've also had to take a quick whiff of dryer sheets if something is really getting to me.
  • I so feel you. My husband usually eats paleo, and during both of my pregnancies I've been made sick by the smell of cooking meat. It's a lose-lose -- either he doesn't get to eat what he wants and we both feel badly about that, or I'm horribly sick and we both feel badly about that. Can you compromise, like maybe he lets you know if he's getting fried chicken and you leave the room, then he leaves a window open or takes other steps to minimize the smell? Sniffing lemon can also help (maybe run half a lemon down the disposal after he eats?), and in a pinch, a quick whiff of rubbing alcohol or an alcohol wipe from a first aid kit can cut nausea. That's how my dad used to combat nausea in his paramedic days (I suppose alcohol wipes are easier to find than lemon wedges on an ambulance).

  • I'm sick all day and smells really make it worse.  My H eats whatever he wants, though, and I just leave the room and go somewhere else.  He's picked up a lot of things I'm not doing since I feel crappy so I don't think he needs to change more with restricting what he eats and drinks.

  • Update! We talked it out this morning both apologized and came to a compromise! Even though he said he would stop eating it all together I said no he didn't need to do that. He normally takes a packed lunch and I said he can eat out more at lunch so he can eat his chicken then! All worked out and both happy with the compromise!
