Confused about all the tests!

I'm scheduled Dec 9 for my second appt. My doctor said they would be doing blood work, another ultrasound, and a lot of paperwork. She mentioned two other optional test. One that would test for things like down syndrome and other abnormalities, and that would tell gender. A second option to test for CF. I didn't catch the specific names for these tests. I've heard that there is a test that takes a placenta sample either through the abdomen or cervix. I'm just looking for a little clarification since I can't call until Monday. Help?

Re: Confused about all the tests!

  • It sounds like they're talking about the Nuchal Translucency test and a Cystic Fibrosis test.  I don't know that the NT test tells you gender, though.  I hadn't heard that.  My OB does the NT test as a standard test during the first trimester.  It was pretty cool - we got to see the baby for a good 20 minutes while they measured stuff. :)

Check with your insurance about the Cystic Fibrosis test.  Sometimes that test isn't covered (as an example, I would have to pay out of pocket for that test).

You shouldn't need to be taking a sample of your placenta unless prior non-invasive tests indicate a problem.  Perhaps if the NT test indicates a higher risk then the placenta sample would be an option.  I'm not too educated on what happens if the NT shows higher risk (or if a placenta sample is the next step).

  • The only Down's syndrome/abnormality screenings that will tell the sex of the baby are harmony and panorama. However, these tests are typically only used for high-risk women. First trimester screening (which is usually standard for non high-risk) is a blood test and ultrasound but you will not find out the sex of the baby. And lastly I'm assuming CF is your cystic fibrosis screening, if you are found to be a carrier your significant other will then need to be tested
  • Thanks. The harmony/panorama must have been the first option she was talking about. I understood it to be a blood test. The CF I'm not worried about since I don't think it is a factor for us.

CF one is Still very important though, no one in my family has it. Not a single one on either side that my extended family knows. I got the test and it turns out I'm a carrier for CF. I was in complete shock! Praying my SO test comes back negative. Not trying to scare you, just stressing the importance. I would've never known
  • At my second appointment (also on Dec. 9) my doctor said that I have the option of doing two blood tests. The first is the Verifi test, which tests for chromosomal abnormalities (like Downs Syndrome) and also tells the sex. The second test is for generic disorders including cystic fibrosis, fragile x, and maybe muscular distrophy. I believe it was called nxtPanel. Or the second one, if i show up as a carrier for any of those generic disorders, they will test H.
  • I believe my ob is doing the Harmony test on Tuesday. I'm not necessarily high risk for anomalies, but I am advanced maternal age so that's the most likely reason he's doing it. Bonus for us, we get the piece of mind knowing baby is ok and because we're impatient, get to find out the sex of the baby!
