High-Risk Pregnancy

Severe vertigo in very early pregnancy

I am 12 DPO and have been getting a positive HPT for several days now. Tonight at dinner I had a severe dizzy spell that lasted about a minute. Throughout dinner I had a handful more. The last one resulted in nausea and an upset stomach.

Any thoughts? I'm healthy with no medical issues. My blood pressure and blood sugar are usually normal. I'm 29. I'm high risk because I have a unicornuate uterus. I take 200mg progesterone at bedtime and a prenatal vitamin. No other meds.

I've never been dizzy in my life so it was pretty scary. Is this normal or cause for concern?

Re: Severe vertigo in very early pregnancy

  • Definitely get checked out by a doctor. I have low BP in pregnancy and dizzy spells along with a host of other symptoms are my norm. You might normally have great BP but it's possible that pregnancy is driving it down.
    Just my experience.

  • My friend, Jessica, she took a test because she kept passing out at work. It's not good by any means, but for some people it's a pregnancy symptom. Definitely call your doctor, but she had a healthy pregnancy after that and has a healthy little girl now!
  • I was dizzy at the beginning because I wasnt eating or drinking enough and hadnt figured out a rhythm for eating aka too much salt or coffee or sugar set me off, maybe try progesterone in the morning? drink more water?
  • The dizzy spells have not returned. I'm still not sure what caused it. I drink around 100oz of water a day (all the time) so I don't think I was dehydrated.  I was eating so my blood sugar was not low. I'ts quite strange. My 3w5d beta was 188 so I guess baby appears to be OK.

How do you take progesterone in the morning? Don't you have to lie flat to get the suppository in?

I would ask your doctor about this. Some have specific instructions for when to use the progesterone and some don't. If you're using the gel type (like crinone) usually it can be done in the morning and not be an issue. If you are using the capsules (like prometrium) they tend to be leakier and you would likely want to lay down afterwards (hence doing them at night is usually the recommendation).
  • I take Prometrium vaginally. They are prescribed to take 1 capsule (200mg) daily at bedtime. I will hopefully talk to my RE's nurse on Monday to schedule my first ultrasound so I'll ask then. Glad that has not returned though.  So far so good... 4w2d beta was 1034.
