High-Risk Pregnancy

Extra Amniotic Fluid

Hi ladies!
I had an ultrasound today at 25 weeks and we found out that I have extra amniotic fluid. The radiologist said that based on the measurements of the facial features he cannot give us an all clear for genetic abnormalities. However, the measurements do not for sure indicate anything either. He said they are all in between. The only other marker that was concerning was that the baby has sandal toe. Ironically, when the sonographer stepped out to get the radiologist I had pointed out the feet to my husband and said that they looked like his, so I am hoping this is a family trait. Also, the baby is measuring large, but that could either be genetic based on my husband being huge at birth or it could indicate a problem.

I had a blood draw to test for trisomy and other abnormalities. Also, I did my 1 hour glucose test today, since gestational diabetes can cause extra fluid. I am so scared and confused. When i did some online research all kinds of scary things came up. I just want the baby to be okay. I was just wondering, has anyone else been through this? What was the cause of the excess fluid?

Re: Extra Amniotic Fluid

  • Try not to worry. 1) My husband has "unique" feet, too, so I can relate. 2) Ultrasounds don't always give us the best measurements. They fluctuate a great deal based in who's doing the measurements and from where. For example, the same tech can measure the same area 3 different times and get 3 different measurements. Your doctor may come in and measure from a totally different point. Do you see what I mean? Especially when it comes to fluid. When mine measured low late in my pregnancy, the tech would tell me that she wanted to make did that she was actually measuring fluid and not something that just looked like fluid on the ultrasound. Ultrasounds are great, but they're not as clear as an MRI or something even to people who do them every day. At 25 weeks, I feel confident that they would have seen something abnormal a long time ago. Did you do one of the cell-free DNA tests?
  • @PlainJane8350 they did a blood test yesterday after the ultrasound scare. Now we have to wait a week for the results.

  • Do you know what test they were running?

I believe your baby's fine. It's good to be cautious and proactive, even though it's scary for us patients, but I believe everything will come back normal and your baby is healthy. If you're not already seeing a specialist, you could ask them to refer to a perinatologist for a one time appointment. I saw a perinatologist my whole pregnancy and she was great. They've seen it all, too, so they can usually tell you not to worry as opposed to waiting on tests.
  • Thanks for the positive thoughts and suggestions. I am not sure what the blood test was. They told me, but I was pretty upset and the name didn't register. I'm going to call tomorrow (after the holiday) and ask the questions I didn't ask yesterday. I do know that it was to check for different forms of trisomy.
  • Perfect, that's the same kind I did. Also, if it were a genetic abnormality, those pregnancies usually end in early miscarriage. I had a missed miscarriage that we found out was due to trisomy 13 around 9 weeks. Your baby probably just has hooves, as I like to call my husband's, like your husband and I've never heard of anyone having too much amniotic fluid before. Try to enjoy your Thanksgiving and I'm the same way, I always forget half of what the doctors say and end up calling back with a list of questions. Nothing wrong with that!
  • Thanks! I appreciate your reassurance. Happy thanksgiving!
  • My fluid is 'high-normal'--has been from at least 22 weeks until now (29). Perinatologist says it's okay and may level out in later weeks. No GD and no other anomalies related to it (I do have a funneled cervix, but that is unrelated).

  • My last pregnancy I had several markers for Down syndrome on my ultrasounds, & I also had low fluid. Because of this the baby had an elevated risk of having Down syndrome or another trisomy. It was a stressful pregnancy, but he was born completely healthy and is a happy 1 year old now. :) Try not to worry too much. Hopefully your results will come back quickly and they will all be reassuring and you will be able to put your concerns behind you.
