Car seat and coats

Anybody figure out a good solution on how to keep baby warm in their car seat? It's starting to get very cold here and i won't put a coat on my dd if she's going to be in her car seat since it's not safe. I normally buckle her and then put a blanket over her legs and belly. She likes to kick it (and her socks/shoes off). I have a car seat cover that attaches to the handle but it doesn't do much to keep her warm bc it's not sealed or anything. I also have jj Cole cover that fits over the car seat, but again, it's not snug and let's air in. So anyway, does anyone know of or have a product that will do the trick? I also will put a hat and gloves on since that doesn't interfere with the buckle

Re: Car seat and coats

  • We have a jj cole car seat cover and it keeps DS very warm. It zippers closed and there's a flap I can cover him up with if its really cold or raining

  • I do the fluffy blanket and try to tuck it in around my little girl as much as possible. She will kick her feet out, but I'm okay with that.

I do a swaddling blanket and tuck it around his legs and then if it's really cold a fluffy blanket on top of that. My son also likes to kick his blanket lol But I think I'm going to buy the JJ Cole car seat cover because it is cold here in Maryland!
  • We love our nido from 7am enfant.

That looks a little bulky. I use a seat cover that is lined with fleece. If it's really cold I'll also use a blanket. I also have a sweatshirt footie from the gap that is big enough to put over light clothes but not too thick that it will interfere with the carseat. In reality most times they aren't going to be outside all that long so just make sure the car is warm prior to putting baby in the car.

This site is a good resource for car seat and coat safety. Anything that goes between the carseat and the baby or has the harness routed through it can be very dangerous and isnt recommended.
  • With the nido the baby is completely flush with the car seat due the large whole in the back the only part that is under him his feet and a little hood. Here is a great link to with keepin baby warm https://thecarseatlady.com/warmandsafe/
  • Minky fabric and especially minky fabric car seat liners are NOT safe. Use a shower cap style cover, put baby in a thin fleece with a hat and blanket, warm the car ahead of time. I live in Wisconsin and it gets cold, but I have never put a coat on in the car seat. My 5yo wears a pea coat that I thought was bulky but I was able to buckle her up without adjusting the straps so we're good (I don't loosen the straps every time she gets out because they're difficult to tighten).

  • Columbia has/had these little fleece zip ups. They look like snow suits, but they are just one lawyer of fleece. I like that you can pull the sleeves and feet closed or open. We'll be using that (arrives tomorrow) and a blanket. Anything thicker is unsafe for carseats. Also, we aren't using the infant bucket seat anymore so those shower cap like covers won't work for us.

If your little one over heats, you could also put a jacket on backwards. So strap them in the car seat, then put the coat on backwards over the straps.
