What do you consider sleeping through the night?

I hear multiple people talk about how "LO slept through the night" only to proceed to say "but woke up at midnight, 4am" for feedings. To me thats not through the nice. Its nice stretches, but i comsoder through the night an uninterrupted at least 6.hours. (which ive yet to see, but.got almost 5 tonight)

My LO slept last night from about 10:30 to 5:30. I consider that sleeping through the night and grounds for a happy dance!

Now that is definitely sleeping through the night!!! Ill do a happy dance for you!!
  • My LO slept from 830-2, then diaper change ate woke up again 4 then ate again slept from 530-8.. I'm secretly doing the happy dance!!!
  • Anything that has the baby sleeping from a time I can go to sleep until after 5 I consider sleeping through the night, but any 5+ hour stretch is amazing considering my baby is only 5 weeks old...

A night interrupted only by a quick feed or two without a diaper change is pretty spectacular, but I agree it's not "sleeping through the night".
  • How many weeks are your babies? Just curious to get an idea (although I know no two babies are alike and they will do it when they are good and ready)
My LO is 7 weeks and few days and still waking up every 2-3 hours at night and not all those times are always for a feed. We have tried everything from keeping lights dim, white noise, keeping her swaddled.... I know she will sleep a little longer when she's ready but hoping for more restful nights soon as she will be 8 weeks this Friday .... Praying for a 5 hour stretch hopefully sometime soon!
  • I would consider 6+ hours without waking up sleeping through the night.  We have not made it to that yet!  The longest we've made it was a 4 hour stretch, she woke up to eat, then another 3 hour stretch.
  • My friend took a baby class and told me that the teacher said "if a newborn sleeps 5 hours that's considered through the night"
  • @jasmineluke my LO is 9 weeks. He was sleeping like your LO from 7-8 weeks and then all of a sudden he's sleeping like this for a couple of days now. He is also eating 6 oz every 3 or so hours. He ate at 830 pm(6oz) 2am(4oz) then ate again at 4am(4oz) .

Thanks for the feedback - my LO is eating 3-3.5 ounces every 2-3 hours at 7 weeks. I wonder if I'm under feeding her which is why she's so cranky after feeding and asking for a feed so often ....?? I wonder if I up the ounces she will sleep better and be less cranky during the day between naps ...
  • @jasmineluke my baby is 6.5 weeks and we've done the once a night with 4 or 5 hour stretches since she came home from the hospital and the pediatrician said I could stop waking her. I ebf with just bottles on occasion so I don't know how much she eats but I would try feeding more and see if that helps. At 5 weeks I was offering 3 oz in a bottle and sometimes she wouldn't finish and sometimes she wanted more but I have a little piggy who's up almost 3 pounds..
  • So no one here feels the need to wake a baby to nurse after she sleeps for 3 hours? I always do but probably shouldnt!
  • I wake my baby up to nurse too about every 3 hours. If I don't he will cluster feed all day...I'm thinking I'll gradually let him go longer at night without me waking him up, but I'll still be getting up to pump.
  • @jasmineluke you could try upping the oz. LO just started taking 6 oz this last week. He would eat 4oz then cry for
More sometimes he would only eat an extra oz but then he would sleep better. My issue with him now is pooping , he cries bloody murder when going and only going once a day. I'm thinking I might have to switch formula again. I feel bad for him..
  • A little piggy - my 7 week old baby is 11lbs! She was born 7lbs even haha!
I guess she's big girl and needs more ...
  • Agree, LO is 9 weeks and at his 4 weeks appt he was 10lb11oz he was 7 lb 9oz at birth... We go to the doctor tomorrow, I'm thinking he's like 15lbs now ! lol his my little chunker!!

I do during the day if she's about to go 3 hours. She was her birth weight the day after we came home so our pediatrician said we could stop waking her up at night.
  • My Dr says wake them at 6 hours to feed. I saw him at 3 weeks and my baby was up 1lb from birth
  • My baby is 3 weeks old and about a half a pound above her birth weight. I guess I can skip waking her at night to feed?
  • LO sleeps from 6:30-10:30 every night and then wakes up to eat. On good nights, he's back down from 11:00-3 and then from 3:30-6:30. I consider sleeping through the night to be 10-12 hours. I'm slowly trying to push back his 10:30 feeding to 12:30 and to transition off of the 3:30 feeding,
  • Since six weeks my LO sleeps 10.30 to 6 and last night she slept 10.30 to 7! I never wake her to feed as she needs the sleep and is gaining well. She feeds six times a day (EBF) and while I have no idea how much she actually is eating, I think she must be a tank during those sessions to see her through the night. I know I'm very lucky! That said, she doesn't really nsp through the day too well.

Did your pedi say anything about it at your 2 week appt? I would stop waking her (although I may be in the minority because I never woke either if my babies). Chances are she won't let you go much longer than 4 hours or so but any extra sleep is glorious!!

  • DD is 7 weeks and sleeps from about 9pm-5:30am and wakes up around 1 ish to nurse /change diaper but falls right back to sleep so I consider that sleeping through the night
  • My baby is 9 weeks I'm breast feeding so she has a feed about 11 sleeps till 2 then wakes again at 5 and sleeps till 8, but the other night a one off she slept from 2 till 7:30 I felt very refreshed still waiting for her to do it again.
  • My LO is 7wks as of 2wks old she started sleeping 10-12hrs but would wake up at 2am and 5am to eat, because we would fall right back asleep I don't count them as really waking up.
  • At 6 weeks my LO started regularly sleeping 8 hours, no waking for changing/feeding. That's through the night for us!!!
  • My LO just slept for 8.5 hours straight last night, it was wonderful! She's just about 6 weeks old and normally sleeps in 5 or 6 hour stretches.
  • Quick question for the moms who's babies are sleeping longer stretches 6-8 weeks old....
My LO is 8 weeks today and we are still looking for longer stretches at night. She tends to sleep soundly for the first stretch at night 9-1. However for the second stretch from 2-5ish she tends to stay asleep with eyes closed but fusses every so often. She may toss and turn a little or move head side to side or even grunt. We try picking her up and changing diaper or re-swaddling her / changing her position at night but it doesn't seem to stop the fussing. She keeps her eyes closed and doesn't cry and appears to be sleeping still during this. My question - should we just leave her be and let her fuss quietly every so often ... Is it normal for her to have restless sleep like that halfway through the night at this age? It's always the second half of her sleeping from 2-5 only!
Sorry for long post - just hesitant to be happy that she's sleep long at least those stretches but not sure if we were jumping the gun in thinking she's actually sleeping with only 2 wake/feed times!
  • Mine does the same thing... I asked the pediatrition and he said it's probably gas that causes the restlessness/grunting/kicking and that we should feed her upright and keep her upright for at least 20 minutes post feed. Since getting that advice I let her fall asleep upright on my chest after she eats, and then we can put her down and she us much less restless than before.
  • My LO is over 7 weeks and doesn't sleep more than 3h in a single stretch. Maybe it's a bit off-topic, but what worked for you in getting such good sleepers? Any tips and advice?

  • I second that ;)

  • The Ollie swaddle makes a huge difference in how our baby sleeps! We also use a white noise machine. No lights in the room. We moved the bassinet to her own room at 6 weeks and she started sleeping through the night because I wasn't tempted to pick her up every time she fussed. She's a noisy/busy sleeper but once we started using that swaddle her sleep improved a lot.
  • When I'm rested too and ready to get up in the morning with her!
  • My daughter has been sleeping 6-8 hours in a row since she was four weeks old (she is now 7 weeks). She usually eats for like an hour straight thwn sleeps 6-8 hours then eats again and sleeos another 3. I am a super lucky mama!
  • Im so jealous. Were still on an every 2-3 hour waking schedule. Im desperate for more sleep. Shes 8 weeks old, some days i guess are better with 4 hour stretches but thats not the norm.
  • We were on a 2-3 hour schedule too up until about 6 weeks. I was finding that I would get up to feed her and she was really only eating about an ounce before falling back asleep. I started trying a pacifier when she wakes up first then if that doesn't do the trick I know she is truly hungry.
Might be worth a shot of it can buy you a longer stretch.

DITTO - my LO is same age and we have the same problem. Last night we were so excited because she did a 5 hour stretch! BUT that was followed by her getting up every other hour until 600 am thereafter so still waiting to see an improvement in sleep. It's hard when you see so many babies at a younger age sleeping better then your 8 weeker but I guess every baby is different and will do it when they are ready, lol... Until then coffee is my bestie ;)
