April 2016 Moms

I really need advice!

So I went for my sonogram 2 days ago and found out we were having a healthy baby boy! Super excited and happy about that, however, the lady that did the sonogram (sorry I don't know the correct term) told me that she would give me a due date of April 12th when my original due date is the 17th. The issue is I had a C-section with my DD so I will be getting another for our DS and the doctor would like to do the C-section a week or so early to make sure I don't go into labor. I am worried that he will want to move my due date to the 12th and want to do the c-section around the 8th or 9th. That's 2 weeks early from my original due date! What if my first due date is correct and they take him out too early? What would you do?

Re: I really need advice!

  • 1) Talk to your doctor about this before stressing too much. My doctor doesn't change due dates until 10 days off the date based on LMP. It's very possible your baby is just small.
    2) 12 days isn't dangerously early by any stretch. Many babies come a week or two "early" on their own (including mine) with absolutely no issues. If it's dangerous enough for you to go into labor that he wants to do the c/s a week early, you and baby are likely safer 2 weeks early than 2 days.
    3) There is no one here with the specific medical training to advise you on this, especially over your doctor's recommendations. If you're uncomfortable, check about a second opinion, but your medical staff should be the ones helping you know when to deliver.

  • They make sure the baby's lungs and everything are fully developed and fully capable so living without problems/assistance before taking them. I have to go in early to be induced because I had no labor pains with my son and had him in 4 hours. It took 5 minutes of pushing so he's concerned that I'd get really far along and not know it. But I have a fetal echocardiogram next month to see if she gas the same heart defects as my son. If so they'll take her even earlier. But they do make sure you're baby is fully developed before taking them unless it's a life threatening situation for mom or baby.
  • Unless there is a really specific concern about your particular section scar (eg, your babies are less than 18 months/two years apart, or it was vertical rather than transverse, or you had a previous partial/threatened rupture in labor), it won't hurt anything for you to go into labor before they do the surgery. If you're really concerned about an early term baby (which is a thing), then that could be a good option for you. But talk to your doctor! If s/he's a good doctor, s/he'll be able to allay your fears without being condescending or bullying, and if not, find a new one!
    Best of luck!
