Babies on the Brain

Do all moms of 4 home-school their kids & go to church?

Nothing negative about this question so don't mis read this please but I am curious if moms of 4 on here also home-school as it seems most the moms of 4 i know do, and go to church every week or more?  Im curious why home-school seems to be the route for parents to 4. And i love people & their faith. I am very spiritual, but i dont put it in all my "about me" type of things on social media etc. but i find that moms of 4 children state this often "mommy to 4, wifey, lover of God, homeschool." I see this so much. I want a 4th child but I am not planning to home school. I want to get to church more but it's hard !!

  • There's very likely some selection bias in your sample.  Maybe it's true that the people around you are doing this, but I don't think it's all that common.  Less than 3% of American children are home-schooled!  With those numbers, it's highly likely that most children from families with 4 children attend public school.

I teach high school in the inner city, and lots of my students come from large families, but I don't think I've ever had a student who was previously home-schooled.  And lots of those families are religious, too.

  • I bet it just seems that way in your circle. Home schooling isn't very big where I live. I only know one family that does it, and they have one child. Also in my circle, people that go to church don't tend to talk about it as much. I go, but many to most of my friends are atheist/agnostic.
  • I come from a family of 4 kids. All of us went to public school and I think we went to church once in all my years at home.

  • I was one of four growing up and we were/are atheist public schoolers. You're probably just in a very conservative pocket of people and your demographic is skewed.
  • We are planning on having four kids. We use public school (although I have thought about homeschooling) and we don't go to church. We aren't religious but spiritual.

I do not home school my 4 or go to church. I do teach them a lot before they go to kindergarten but I think it's pretty normal :).
  • Thanks for replies! I was afraid that my post would get misread so i am relieved to read your kind, wise & knowledgable responses! I didn't consider my circle small,,, but i think that was actually a really good point & i had NO idea how few kids were home schooled! i honestly think i have met all 3% lately!

  • I'm a mom of 4 (almost 5) and I homeschool. We homeschool because we live out of country and do now have many great options for schools right now.

I don't know many families with 4+. In fact I know 2 and they public school. Several of my friends have 3 and only one of them homeschools. We live in a fabulous school district so I plan on utilizing it. The friend that homeschools does not live in a great area or have a lot of money but her kids get to be involved in a ton of activities that they could not otherwise have time for. They are extremely well behaved and responsible. I think it really just depends on the area you live in. Here are some questions to ponder: Are the schools good? Would you be willing to/can you afford to move to an area with good schools or enroll in private school? What things are important to you and your family? Do you want to work or stay home? We are not very religious but many friends are. They go to church on the weekend and several with young children have joined MOPS. (From my understanding is a social club for Christian moms)
