Braxton Hicks already?

I am 18+3 today and I think i got some BH yesterday and this morning. I was laying down last night and the right side of my uterus got really hard then went away a few sec later. Didn't last long. Then this morning something similar but the my whole uterus (across the bottom). Not sure if it was the baby, or the bloating due to constipation/gas or if it was really BHs. I talked to the nurse who made it sound like it was to early to have them but the doc said to go to the ER if i get more than 5 in an hour. They don't hurt or anything, just feel this tight feeling then goes away. I have never been a good water drinker (pre-pregnancy) but I have been drinking tons since I found out. I was laying down in both instances. I kinda know what a contraction feels like...i had contractions during my periods and this felt nothing like that, not painful just tight and uncomfortable. I haven't had one since this morning (i think) but finally had a BM and i feel baby move/kick. No blood or excessive discharge out of the normal. Anyone else have these early on? My next doc appointment is Dec 14.

Re: Braxton Hicks already?

  • Mine started at 17 weeks
  • Loading the player...
  • I have them periodically throughout the day, started around 18/19 weeks. I am 21 weeks now, my OB did not seem concerned.
  • There have been a lot of women on here having BH for 3-4 weeks now. Mine started at 17 weeks last pregnancy and this pregnancy as well.

Last pregnancy I would have them anytime I moved toward the end. Starting from 32ish weeks on, I would have about 10-15 an hour, at least! My doctor was never concerned. I never rushed to the hospital after having 4 in an hour and I carried that baby full term.

My dr. Told me that the only time I should be worried is if they accompanied by a lot of weird discharge/blood(mucus plug) or if they start to get really painful and crampy(real contractions).

Some women are prone to having BH and a lot of them! Try not to worry about it too much lol. Easier said then done I know :joy:

  • Mine started early this time around, like 14-15 weeks. I am always borderline dehyrated though and water made me feel super sick until recently so I know that's causing it. My Dr. has never been concerned, just gave me the same guidelines you have pretty much, more than 6 in an hour, go get checked out just in case (I've had preterm labor in the past with other pregnancies).

Mine started around 18-19 weeks and lasted until we kicked my son out at 40w. I'm 18w today with #2 and got a little bit of one last night for the first time. My son was over 9lbs and I only pushed for an hour, so maybe there is some truth to it being like warm ups for game day.

  • Mine started at 14-15 weeks this time! You're fine. They're not dangerous at all. Just make sure you aren't getting more than about 4 in an hour.

  • I'm on baby 4 and they started at 16 weeks for me. I don't remember them this early with my other three. Dr said no need to be concerned unless they are consistent, increase, and get painful.
  • Does anybody know if having a lot of BH or getting them early is correlated to labor length etc? I had a very textbook labor that was relatively short (but not freakishly fast) for a first labor. I had a ton of BH the whole pregnancy and wonder if they actually helped prepare my uterus for labor. Anybody know real science behind this besides my pregnancy brain logic?

I can't find any actual science, but boy would that be nice! I technically labored 21-22 hours with DD and had never felt a BH. This baby I've had noticeable ones for weeks now, so that means significantly shorter labor this time right?!?

I mean, some peoples definition of science if they hear one anecdote. So I can definitively answer your question that scientifally the answer is "yes".

I had them pretty consistently for the last half of the first pregnancy and that labor was just under 12 hrs. I have them again this time, so, we can hope?!
  • I told my mom I had started getting them around 18 weeks and she freaked out because she thought it wasn't normal to get them this early. She kept telling the baby he wasn't allowed to come out yet. Glad I read this though because there's nothing worse than someone freaking you out from their freaking out lol
  • Labor length was my next question! Thanks ladies. I really hope these BH will mean shorter labor. My doc thinks ill be in for while since its my first. I want to go epi free so fingers crossed.

Not sure about real science but like I said in my comment above, I had so many BH last pregnancy it was unreal. Like more often than not unreal. My labor sounded a lot like yours. I don't think they helped as much as I was hoping they would!

    Empirical research, woo!

  • Mine started at the end of the first trimester with DS. They were intense and stayed intense the rest of my pregnancy. I only started feeling BH in the last couple of weeks, so I'm so thankful they did not start as early and are not as painful.

  • @mrstrax I was in labor for 33 hours with DS and had early and terrible BH. FTM usually feel less or no BH, while STM usually get BH. I'm excepting them to worsen as this pregnancy progresses... I'm really hoping for a shorter labor this time around, no issues dilating, and no signs of pre-eclampsia.

Oh I know, just lots of wishful thinking :)

Based on my experience, I think it helped! I had them for over half my first pregnancy, consistently. While I had to be induced, the whole process progressed wonderfully and I only pushed for an hour. My son was pretty big, too, so I really do feel like my body was "ready." I hope the BH had something to do with it, since I have started already with this baby!

    Baby #2 due 4/26/16!

  • Mine started around 9-10 weeks with both my pregnancies.
  • Went in to get checked out on wed because i kept having them all morning. She still insisted it was unusual to have them so early. Everything checked out ok but have me some low dose blood pressure med to help relax my muscle and prevent them...taken as needed.
