1st Trimester

No doctors appointments?

So I've been seeing so many posts about people having paps, ultrasounds and other doctors visits at 5,6 and 7 weeks. After the gyno confirmed my pregnancy with blood work, they referred me to an obgyn that said "ok we'll see you at your 8 week mark." But because this is my first pregnancy I'm freaking out. I'm desperate to know if my levels are ok, if the heart beat is normal and if there's anything wrong! Is it normal to not have any visits at all until 8 weeks or do I need to call and schedule them?

Re: No doctors appointments?

  • A lot of docs don't until 8-10 weeks, that's considered pretty standard. I was surprised mine was willing to see me whenever- they actually wanted to see me asap even though I have no history of loss, and that ends up being at 6+5- granted, I haven't even had bloodwork yet. I know how you feel and I'd go crazy waiting that long. Maybe ask if there's any way you can get in earlier, or possibly see someone else since it does seem to be getting more common to go in earlier. You would need to do a vaginal ultrasound to see it and the heartbeat that early, but to me that's definitely worth it.

  • It's normal to wait until 8 weeks. Before then, many doctors will only see you to confirm dating (when you don't know) or if you've had previous losses.

  • 8 is pretty standard. Actually, on the early-ish side of standard. It surprised me at first, but apparently there isn't much to see before then.

I went in at 6 for this pregnancy but it is only because I had an ectopic earlier this year, so they wanted to confirm implantation.

It sucks, it can be a very long couple of weeks there :) Hang tight!
  • I'm only going so frequently due to having two MC's this year back to back. Trust me, I would love to be able to wait until week 8... I feel like going as often as I am, and having all these u/s are just making me even more worried.

  • Completely normal. This is my first pregnancy, so no history of miscarriage or complications, and today is my first appointment with my OB at 10w 2d.
  • Depending on the office. Some women do not go in until 12 weeks, even 20 weeks sometimes. 8 weeks is considered early for some practices (I had mine at the predicted 7-8 week mark). If you went in right now, you wouldn't see much and that'll freak you out even more. So since you've never had a loss, then they're not worried about it. I know it's hard and early pregnancy is scary because this is also my first :) but you gotta hope and pray baby is growing as it should and Mother Nature is doing her job. It's unproductive to stress about something out of your control.
  • every doctors office does things differently. i found out at 6.5 weeks that i was pregnant. i called after i got a positive test & they got me in right away to confirm the pregnancy. they also gave me a bunch of paperwork. i didnt have my firsr prenatal appointment/US until 12 weeks tho.
  • Your office is normal.  It is other's that go in earlier that is the "abnormal practices". Plus, you probably wont have a beta blood test to check levels any way.

Just repeat after me: "Today I am pregnant, and I love my baby".
    Thank God for Raid.

  • I'm being seen for the first time at 9 weeks even with an early loss in June.  I didn't even have blood work to confirm.

  • My midwife isn't seeing us until week 11, and it isn't for sure that we will get an US at that point.  There was no pregnancy confirmation appointment nothing --Every doctor, every pregnancy, every insurance plan is different.  Some are getting early appointments because they have dealt with miscarriages or infertility issues.  As long as there isn't an issue there is really no need to see the OB/midwife earlier.

First, your title is misleading... Its not that you aren't having "any appointments" at all. Its that you are waiting until the 8 week mark. The reasons for this are many, but mainly, when you do the transvaginal ultrasound there is more to see at 8-10 weeks vs. early on. Those women having earlier appointments have a history of pregnancy loss and infertility. Its not a club you want to join, true story.

I understand worrying about potential troubles, and that's a concern for most pregnant women. You aren't alone, and I understand (I've been there). Betas are NOT standard procedure. Usually they are done if there is a medical concern (not just because a mom wants them) or question of pregnancy viability.

Its perfectly normal to have an ultrasound at the gestational age you state.

Thank you for your passive aggressive yet still informative response!
You see I'm only 19, and doing this relatively on my own so I honestly have no clue how any of this works. So thank you once again.

Doing it on your own is difficult...I was there with DD.  My best advice is to trust your OB!!  If your OB thought there was an issue and needed to schedule before the 8 weeks you would be there!.  Its so hard to wait a month between appointments, and to blindly trust your body is doing what it needs to but you have to :)  Otherwise you will drive yourself crazy.

  • Totally normal. My first appointment was at 9 weeks. I only got an ultrasound because my OB couldn't find the heartbeat on the doppler, otherwise I would have only gotten the anatomy scan at 20 weeks.

  • I agree with pp. I don't see any passive aggressive commentary and to be honest I agree with it. I clicked on the thread thinking "Why doesn't she have any doctor appointments?" I wondered for a split second if you were someone that didn't believe in going to doctors and then immediately saw you did have one and was confused about the title as well. Word of advice, just because you get an honest or blunt comment, does not mean it's an attack on you. It's a genuine sentiment and attempt to help. Happy and healthy pregnancy to you.

  • I am being seen at 8 weeks with a loss in July! So nerve racking
  • We don't see patients in our office before 9 weeks.
I had to be seen earlier due to bleeding and an Spontaneous abortion aka miscarriage in June. You should be happy you don't have to go In sooner so enjoy it!
I agree with PP that no response you have received has been " passive aggressive ". Not sure what you are looking for here.

I'm not sure you understand what "passive aggressive" means...
  • In the same boat. This is my first pregnancy, and my doc scheduled me for an appointment at 8 weeks (4 weeks after my yearly, when I got my BFP). I worry and wonder if I should request to go in early, especially when I have few symptoms and start freaking out that something is wrong. But I've decided I need to just let my body do its thing, and I'm anxiously counting down until that appointment in 2 and a half weeks.
