Maternity leave at my company

I have a small company and I am pregnant along with one of our employees. I am planning to take 2-3 weeks and then go back because I have to do that as the boss (and that's fine). I told the other woman that she could take a full 3 months paid. But then we didn't hit our numbers this year so have a lot less cash going into next year. Do I scale back her paid maternity leave? I feel awful.

Re: Maternity leave at my company

  • Totally not a question for us. But if I were the employee and was told I'd get 3 months paid and then it was taken away or lessened, I'd be pretty ticked.

  • I agree with pp. You may need to call your local labor board to find out what you can and can't do now that you've made a commitment to your employee.
  • Yeah, you've basically got two questions to answer: 1. Are you legally obligated to honor that promise? And 2. Do you value your relationship with the employee?

If the answer to #2 is yes, then it doesn't really matter what the answer to #1 is. If you want her to preserve the relationship and keep the employee, you should honor the promise of three months' paid leave.
