Cold sores anyone?

Any moms out there who get cold sores? FTM here and wondering about any precautions you need to take. I never actually have any breakouts but what are the risks? There is not a lot of information that I could find on oral herpes out there so maybe there is no need for concern???? Except for some articles that freaked me out coz they talked about baby going blind or getting pneumonia ??????

It's pretty normal to have mouth sores and sensitive gums during pregnancy. I wouldn't Google "herpes" because there are many different forms all varrying in severity. If you are getting the sores inside your mouth rinse with orajel. They have a special rinse for mouth sores. If you are getting them on your lips ask a pharmisit for some over the counter ointments. Then when you go to your next appointment ask your dr. about how to deal with them and share your concerns.

  • I recently read an article called "Please Don't Kiss My Baby" and it was all about how kissing a baby with an active breakout could spread it to the baby and make it really sick. I agree with pp. Also check with your doctor to ask for any concerns or precautions you need to take.
  • I get cold sores when my immune system is down and when I'm on my monthly. I had none this or last pregnancy *knocks on all the wood* or post partum.

I did read a lot of literature and I think blindness might have had to do with genital herpes or kissing baby's face when you have an active cold sore. Definitely ask your OB if you get them a lot.
  • Cold sores are herpes simplex 1. Different from cancer sores or amphtous ulcers. Children and babies could suffer from something called gingivostomatitis (cold sores all over their lips, gums, chin and face) which comes also comes from Herpes 1 and is accompanied by fever.

This all comes frompeople kissing the baby in the mouth.

I'm probably the cold sore guru of this bunch. (Unfortunately)
I typically take a prescription called famcyclovir. But since it's not a pregnancy safe drug, I can't take it.
I'm 25 weeks and already had 3 cold sores that I can't treat due to pregnancy. :(
So I've just had to suck it up and use good old fashioned carmex...which makes it feel a bit better but doesn't make it go away.

Anyway, cold sores are highly contagious. I would never consider kissing a baby (or anyone else) while having a cold sore. But that's not because they'll go blind. It's because it would seriously be rude to spread your cold sore cooties to someone else!
Follow simple rules and the cold sore won't spread. Wash your hands often. Never touch your mouth or face. If you do, WASH YOUR HANDS. Don't kiss anyone anywhere. Not their lips or their face or even their shoulder. And don't share utensils or cups.

Other than that, it's just a cold sore. No big deal.

  • I too read the article "please don't kiss my baby". The main points were to not kiss baby on the mouth for I think the first 6 months or something. Because it isn't until after then that they would be able to fight it. But I too second the whole not kissing at all while you have an active sore. Better safe than sorry.
