Re circumcision

Just wondering if anyone has had to have they're little boy re circ? When my son was born his father and I were on opposing sides as to circumcise or not, in the end I ultimately decided to have it done. He was near the cut off date as he was about 5 1/2 weeks when he had his circ done. After everything healed I noticed something didn't seem right bc you couldn't see the head of the penis at all and the skin could not be pulled off. After a visit to the specialist they determined that the circ line healed over the penis head and gave us cream to help looses the line so it could be pulled back. The cream worked and now there is a lot of excessive skin. It doesn't look uncircumcised it just looks like something is wrong. The dr said that hopefully as he grows he will grow into it if not then a re circ will have to be preformed at 2 yo. We have not made the decision yet whether or not we'll have it done depending on what happens in the next year and half but has any one had to have a re circ done or know someone that did and how they're child handled it. I already feel bad for having it done since it didn't turn out right but I felt like it needed to be done as kids can be cruel. just looking for some insight what to expect if we do decide to have it done.

Thanks moms!

No experience here, but wanted to wish your little boy well and send hopes that as he grows the situation will resolve itself. Also, don't feel bad, mama, you did what you thought was best and there was an unforseen complication. That's all.

  • It's pretty common for circs to reconnect.
A few of my friends have had this happen to their boys.
You REALLY have to pull back on that skin every single day......
Like really pull in some cases!!!!
I blame the pediatricians who don't educate patients enough on this.
  • Loading the player...
  • Also it might look funny because of fat.
That abdominal fat can push down and make that skin around the base very fatty looking and can cover up the tip sometimes.

Exactly! My friend told me to do this after her son had had troubles... No doctor ever clued me in

Does everyone have to pull the skin back? We weren't told to do that, either, but the ped never says anything at his well baby visits and it looks normal to me down there?

  • Yep everyone is supposed to pull it back pretty hard. Everyday.
  • Weird I was never told that either. I think I get the effect of pulling it back when giving him a good wipe and getting in all the crevices after peeing and pooping but I've never pulled it back just to pull it back.

Until when? Like, should I start doing it now, 5m later? And if so, when do I stop?

  • The Dr never told me this either...I just looked at the dr when they brought him back and said "what kind of care do I have to do?" and all they told me was to put a little vaseline on the inside of the diaper while it was still healing.  I pull it back when I wipe it like others do and the dr said everything looked good at his check ups but now I'm worried that I should have been doing more
  • I was told to pull it back but then when I was concerned about how to do it the dr said not to worry and he would do it at our checkup the following week. ( this was a couple of weeks after he was born). So I let him it at the check up. ( my DH actually took him bc I was having some complications from the delivery so I did not see what was done but assumed it was taken care of). My pediatrician kept saying everything looked good. Around 5 months I had to take him to a urologist for something else. He mentioned the regrowth and said he could fix it then and there but it would hurt a bit or we could try pushing it at every bath til it got better. I did not want to see my ds in pain but I was terrified at the thought of doing it wrong. So I let the urologist do it. My ds did amazing. Barely cried though was definitely uncomfortable at the next few diaper changes. I Have to now pull it back ( much easier to see what he is talking about and do it now) and put Vaseline on it at least 6 diaper changes a day for 3 months. I feel horrible it did not get taken care of right the first time but he is going great.
  • I don't know the answers to these questions but I wanted to make sure no one misinterprets this to mean they should pull back intact foreskin. If you son isn't circumcised you should never forcibly retract the foreskin. Probably an unnecessary comment but it was on my mind all day.

Its maddening to read this, it seems like followup care for things is so poorly explained. We go in every few days at the end of pregnancy. The we have an actual baby that needs care and they send us on our way . . . To consult internet forums. June15 is awesome of course but this doesn't seem like the best system.

  • They never told me at the hospital to pull it back but our pedi told us at his 2 month check up. I still do it daily because as @klkonwi said above, the tip gets lost sometimes now.
  • Yeah docs are dropping the ball on this everywhere it seems..... Dumb.
  • My sisters baby is almost 10 months and had to have his circ redone a couple months ago cuz it was crap from the hospital! He had to be put under anesthesia for it but did fine with everything. She had to go to a pediatric urologist for it.

And ya the foreskin should be pulled back every day as @klkonwi said. Drs really are dropping the ball these days, I'm a community health nurse now and most of the patients I see don't even know that they have serious chronic illnesses or how to manage them and have had these diagnosis' for years! It's sad...
  • It's interesting to read all this. I agonized for months over whether to circumcise LO or not, and had regret about (not doing) it for the first three months of his life. All the pro-circumcision arguments said complications and issues are extremely rare... But looking here, it seems more common since doctors don't seem super helpful.

Thats not a value statement and I still kind of wish we'd done it... But just a note that there seems to be rampant lack of information on the topic, unfortunately.

Hope all goes well for everyone's little boys!!
  • If you Google 'infant circumcision care' it doesn't even say anything in any of those results, either. Wtf, man. How is anybody supposed to know this?
