Having twins, freaking out

I just found out I am having twins and am completely shocked! I have an 18 month old daughter already and am wondering how we are going to manage three kids so close in age. My husband also just had surgery yesterday and couldn't come to the appointment. He fell on his shoulder while playing with our daughter on Thursday and can't pick her up or help around the house for several weeks because he's in a sling. I just need some support right now! Thanks!

  • Congrats.  I've never been in your situation, but I'm sure you'll make it work.  I think there are some other ladies that are having twins as well.

  • I feel for you. I can't imagine being pregnant and chasing a LO around, and without a fully functioning hubby!

Calico is right - we have 2 sets of twins so far, you make our third! Can't remember screen names well enough to reference here, but check out the ultrasound pic thread - they're on there. :)
  • Good luck mama! How early do you find out if twins??
  • Try to be excited! It will all fall into place
  • My grandmother found out she was pregnant at her 6 week check up...She ended up with twins. She said it was tough at the very beginning but then they kept each other company. ;) congratulations. And I hope your DH gets to feeling better.
  • Congrats! I'm sure it's nerve wracking news. Life has a way of figuring itself out.
  • I know you're freaking out, but it is truly a double blessing! Yes, it will be hard at first. But once you get them potty trained, it will be a breeze. You've got this mama! Congratulations.
  • I agree with @BostonBaby1 It will be tough for a couple years, but it is such a blessing. I've always wanted twins but would have been easier perhaps if it was your first. I truly wish you luck. Try to enjoy it!
  • Congratulations! I'm sure it's a big shock, but things will work out. I have a good friend who had twins with her second pregnancy, and ended up with 3 under 2. She says that it's challenging but manageable, you just have to be organized!

When I asked my friend how she managed it all (I had DD right after she had her twins, so in the midst of my new mom haze and struggles I was amazed that someone could do it with 2 newborns and a toddler), she said that routine was crucial. She got all her kids on a strict sleep and feeding routine, and it worked really well for her. She also said when one twin woke up to eat, she'd wake the other and feed her as well. Otherwise she'd never have had sleep. She did breastfeed but had to supplement with formula, which made things easier because her husband could help with feeds.

She also said she had her kids sleeping in the same crib. ***Disclaimer - I believe this is against public health recommendations for safe sleeping, so definitely do your research and/or talk to your doctor/midwife/nurses about sleeping practices with twins, but this is one piece of advice she gives to every new mom of twins that she talks to (surprisingly we know a lot!!) She said it was very distressing for the twins emotionally to be put in separate beds, and as soon as she laid them down together they instantly soothed each other and slept.
  • Thanks everyone for your support! I am thankful both babies are healthy and I am sure we will figure things out as we go. My husband is amazing and very supportive. This pretty much guarantees that I won't be going back to work. Three babies at $1,800 a pop doesn't financially make sense. Here we go!
  • Ahh so crazy but exciting! Let us know how we can support and encourage you! I'm sure things will work out financially they usually do! So happy to hear your DH has been awesome and wonderful to you as he should be! And so pleased to hear they babes are doing well as well! Congrats again!

  • I'm having twins too! Slightly freaking out but so excited! When are you due? I'm 7/17
  • So exciting! And I'm slightly jealous. I was hoping for twins with my pregnancy. One of my friends is carrying twins now and while I can see it's not the easiest pregnancy, since you already have some experience with your first, you got this! Congrats! Are they identical or fraternal?
  • Congrats! It's going to be hard, but you will get through it!

Yayayayay so many twins now! I'm 9 w tomorrow with Fraternal twins! I'm basically going back and forth between shock, denial, excitement, terror, joy...you know. All the feelings. At once.

I'm pretty sure I won't be going back to work either. It'll cost way too much for daycare and I don't trust anyone anyway. They will be my first children.
  • Awesome @jlgriff11! How do you know that they are fraternal already? I don't think we will find out until the anatomy scan when the sex is determined!
  • @mamaErin2 Clomid twins! Also, two sacs, which I know isn't foolproof, but I'm willing to hedge a bet.
