Bra Advice

I'm wondering what one does with bras while pregnant. I know there are maternity bras but they seem to be just stretchy things. How much do breasts really grow? Do you buy up a size?

I'm already busting out of current size, and am wearing my formerly too big bras that are a cup size up, but they don't really fit either. Anybody who has or is going through this? Just go to Target? What's your advice.

Re: Bra Advice

  • I went to Ross and Gordmans for bigger bras. They were cheap and have lasted throughout the pregnancy. I'm 36 weeks so once my milk comes in I'll probably buy nicer breastfeeding bras.

  • I wore regular bras until I gave birth. I wore a size up from regular from about halfway through the pregnancy on. Target has an in-store brand that usually runs around $12. Very affordable and comfortable.
Be open to the idea that your band size may change as well, possibly a lot. If the bras you're wearing now don't fit right, get measured or try a band size up in a variety of cup sizes. Lots of stuff can change and it almost all affects your bra size.

  • I did not have a large bust before but during my first tri I grew out of my bras. I grew a little more and actually for the past few weeks I have been wearing Hanes bras from Target. They look like sports bras but way more comfy since I can find a regular bra that fits right. I think I'm in between sizes or something.

Im almost 29 weeks... I have bought bras 5x this pregnancy i splurged on good maternity bras the 1st 2x then said f it I kept growing out of them..... So I just been buying good sports bras from target (they make nice ones now that have extra support in them so your boobs don't feel like they are down to your knees. I did recently buy 2 from Victoria secrets that zipper in front (sports bras) they are my favorite but are pricey. The bigger your breast get the more supportive bra you need i just didn't find it worth it to spend 40$-60$ on a GOOD maternity bra and found sport bras much better!
  • I started out a 34F and I don't really know what size I am even though I'm wearing a 40 DD. The 40 just felt so good around my ribcage but it's really too big and my breasts don't sit in the cup like they should. I just couldn't justify spending $80 on a new bra that I'm going to outgrow again.

  • Personally, I'm a fan of getting cheap bras at kohls in the clearance section. I actually just bought three new ones (between 6-15 bucks for 30$ and up bras) the day before I got my positive test! So those won't fit long I guess.
  • Buy one at a time until your milk really comes in (after birth). Everyone is different but your size can change a lot during and after pregnancy and you don't want to waste money "investing for the future." Also, get fitted by a real bra professional (not Victoria Secret) as you grow. You don't need to spend a ton of money on bras, but you do want to make sure to support your breasts well as they grow/stretch.

Band size should only really change if you carry very high (into your rib cage) or gain substantial weight in your upper torso (not including breast tissue). The band size is the measurement of the Underbust (rib cage below the breast) and people in the US are very frequently missized in the band in order to get them to fit in a "standard" cup size (A-DD).

Cup size is going to fluctuate the most due to the expansion of breast tissue from hormones. (Unfortunately change in breast size is rarely indicative of milk production). You can calculate cup size by measuring the circumference of the full bust (around your chest/bust at the fullest point) and subtract the Underbust measurement. The cup size is the difference between the 2. <1" is AA. 1" is A, 2" is B, 3 is C, etc.

That will give you a starting point of what size to try, but you'll still need to fit. The band should feel snug when latched at the bars closest to the edge; that way as the fabric stretches from wear you can move to hooks further in to maintain the correct fit. I still recommend getting a professional fit done to ensue you're in the right size. Larger breasts are pretty heavy and you can do some long term tissue damage by not supporting them properly during this time.

Pregnancy-specific bras are cut higher around the center front of the Underbust too allow the bump to come through comfortably. I never felt the need, but I know women who carried very high who swore by them.
