Nap time help!

Ok mommies, I need your help getting my little one to nap more than 30-40 minutes! She is 6 weeks old and at night sleeps in the Fisher Price rock n play in our room and during the day at nap time, she sleeps in the crib in her room. We would like to transition her to the crib at night but want her to nap in her crib a little bit better. We are doing the eat, wake, sleep routine and from eat and wake time, she is up an hour and a half. She eats every 3 hours so I try to get her to nap for an hour and a half but she wakes up early every time. We usually have to go rock her and put her back to bed sleepy. I am not putting her down sleeping as I want her to be able to fall asleep on her own. We have a nap time routine of swaddling, rocking (with pacifier) and the sound machine is on but she still wakes up early! Any help would be great!!

It sounds like you're doing exactly what I'm doing. My guy does sleep in his crib BUT we put the little snuggle nest cosleeper in the crib and he sleeps in that. I don't imagine a rock n play would be safe to sleep in, if placed in the crib.

I would maybe get her more asleep. I know it's good to self soothe but I was also told this isn't developmentally possible until 4 months anyway so maybe let her fall asleep for awhile before putting her in the crib and as time passes let her fall asleep on her own in there.

We also do almost all changes in his room and will go in there just to rock in the rocker, read books or sing about once a day.

I think transitioning to the crib works better when used for nighttime. Day sleep is already more difficult that adding in another variable just makes it harder while also complicating bedtime since crap naps=crappy night time sleep.

Short naps result from an infants circadian rhythm.  We all have a sleep/wake cycle and wake after the completion of each cycle but infants aren't born with knowing how to immediately soothe themselves back to sleep the way we do and end up waking after 30 or 40 minutes.

Motion helps with the transition.  Swings, bouncers and rock n plays all allow you to "catch" LO when he is moving through that transition and soothe him back down.  Pay attention to baby at that 30 minute mark and start rocking ( a swing takes care of this for you), white noise and swaddling will also help.  Some babies are just cat nappers and struggle with the transition no matter what you do (my first had short naps until he was about 7 months).  Nap consolidation also helps with this issue.  As your baby begins to drop from 5 to 4 naps a day and have longer wake windows he or she will most likely start napping longer.

Here is a great resource for understanding and possible solutions.

ETA: 6 weeks is really early for drowsy but awake and will likely be unsuccessful much of the time.  My pediatrician usually advises me to start trying at our 4 month appointment which is past the fourth trimester.
