Should I switch formulas?

Hey guys . So I'm unable to breast feed. I been using the powder good start. babys farting like always and they smell deathly. She crys before or after she farts sometimes . She poops once a day. Also she spits up almost after every feeding also . Should I switch formulas or is all this normal? If so.. Which one is better than good start . Thanks

Re: Should I switch formulas?

  • Im formula feeding as well. I use the target brand similac advanced. Lo spits up a bit, but only small amounts. She went through a stage that she seems to have really bad gas pains and was spitting up more often, we tried similac sensitive and it actually seemed to make it worse. Make sure shes burping often enough. We had to go to burping every one ounce. Also you can try gas drops before feeding. That helped us.
We found that by changing formulas it took lo a day or so to get back to normal when we switched back.
If you do in fact decide to switch. Ask your pedi for samples they usually have them. Goodluck!!

  • Ditto on the gas drops- they're harmless and really help. Babies at this stage just have trouble sometimes. Their digestive system isn't fully developed. Are you using liquid or powder formula? If powder, try mixing with a metal fork instead of shaking and make a few bottles a while in advance and let them settle in the fridge before using. Helps with the bubbles.
  • We Started out supplementing with Similac sensitive, but baby was spitting up a lot. We switched to enfamil for gas and fussiness and she was still spitting up. It was suggested that we try a soy based formula. She wasn't spitting up as much but she is constipated, so we just switched back to Similac. We'd rather have her spit up (harmless and normal) than go through constipation. It really hurts my heart to see her in so much pain. I too am searching for the right formula for my LO
  • Sounds like my boy. We had him on enfamil infant. Only one bm a day and TOOOOONS of spit up, practically everything he ate. I started replacing a bottle during the day with liquid formula and now he's less fussy, MUCH less spit up and multiple bms a day. I got that tip from a friend and it really works!
  • We switched our first to the target gentle brand from the Costco brand when she had digestive issues. But I think it was a phase and we were able to switch her back pretty easily. I'm not sure it makes a difference, even the gas drops, which we've tried too. Some days they're just fussier and spit up more. At least that's my experience.
  • Our little guy is eating enfamil newborn and we found that we have to burp every ounce to help with his gas. He also isn't having a bm every day but the pedi said that's fine with formula babies. He is growing like a weed so we're sticking to the enfamil.
  • My daughter farts all the time on Enfamil Newborn and they do smell bad but they don't seem to make her uncomfortable so I don't worry about it. If your baby cries before/after the vast majority of her farts then it could be gas pains related to the formula. I'd try gripe water and/or gas drops first before switching.

Only one poop a day is normal for FF babies though because formula is harder to digest than breastmilk. I called the pediatrician the first time baby went more than 24 hours without pooping and they said it was fine, and to call back if it had been three days. Most days she poops once, some days twice, and occasionally skips a day.

As far as the spit up - are you getting enough burps out? If DD isn't burped enough she tends to spit up more. Sometimes I'll burp her halfway through a bottle (she's eating 4 oz now) and it seems to help. But if you're burping frequently and the gas drops/gripe water don't help then I would consider trying a different formula.
