Painful Braxton hicks?

I'm 38 weeks +4 and yesterday I had a appointment my midwife checked me and said I was 3cm and 75% effaced. After I left I had contractions that were painful every 5 minutes then they skewed down to every 10 and eventually eased off. Then this morning around 6am they came back. Every 10 minutes. I took a bath and since then they aren't as bad but still every 10 minutes. I've already called my midwife waiting on a call back but what does everybody think? Painful Braxton hicks or real labor? I've heard most Braxton hicks aren't painful that's why I ask. Thanks ladies!

Re: Painful Braxton hicks?

  • Braxton hicks can definitely be painful. It's not "real labor" if it doesn't intensify and become more frequent. If yours keep tapering off I'd say I'm pretty sure it's just braxton hicks. Try to stay very hydrated and that will help also. Good luck! :)

  • Sounds like my experience with prodromal labor.

This. I think you'll be able to tell when they are real contractions. The pain will be very different and most importantly, consistent.
  • I would say Braxton Hicks. My OB told me that real contractions will intensify and become more "rhythmic".

  • Just because they're not active labor contractions doesn't mean they aren't "real" contractions. They are. It sounds to me like prodromal labor.
