3rd Trimester

Prenatal massage that wasn't prenatal

Had a massage today and paid for prenatal.. Turns out the therapist didn't know I was pregnant!! I am officially panicked that I've hurt the baby or myself. Thoughts?

  • If I were you I'd call your doctor and let them know what happened and see what they say. I have no idea but the may want to do an US and check on baby but if you aren't feeling badly and if she didn't have you laying on your stomach or anything you're most likely fine.

Also I'd be speaking to the manager of that establishment because that's not acceptable.

  • As long as she didn't do a lot of abdominal massage you should be okay.

  • She didn't do much but I'm so paranoid!! I would never forgive myself if I hurt the baby getting a massage!
  • Were you on your stomach or side? I've had two prenatal massages this pregnancy and the only difference in the actual massage was I was on my side for the prenatal massages. I wouldn't be too worried, but I would still call my OB and let them know what happened.

Most likely you are fine but I would say calling and checking with your doctor is never a bad idea. I am confused as to how she didn't know. Every time I have had a massage they also go over my "history" with me for a few minutes and discuss what type of massage I want and if I have any problem areas.  Are you not obviously pregnant in your 3rd trimester? Also did you lay on your stomach? I just had a prenatal massage a few weeks ago at 18 weeks and I had to lay on my side since she didn't have a table for pregnant women (with the hole for your belly).

  • They usually have you on your side and avoid massaging a few areas of the body that can induce labor.
  • I'd ask which oils/essential oils were used and tell your dr because I think that certain ones are to be avoided in pregnancy. I'm also pretty sure that MOST of the difference is just about comfort. I went at 20 weeks and could still lay on my stomach- we just put a couple extra towels under my hips to take the pressure off.

  • You really shouldn't worry unless it was a super super deep massage the only areas that usually therapists tend to go really light on are around the ankles if she just gave you a basic Swedish massage your fine. Usually the products are hypo allergenic too, (a lot of women don't tell the therapists that their pregnant just to be seen btw.)
  • You're probably fine. There are pressure points that masseuses avoid during pregnancy, as they can induce contractions, and certain essential oils, but it's unlikely they will actually put you in labor.
  • I'm a massage therapist, as long as the therapist did not have you laying on your stomach past 2nd trimester there is not a whole lot to worry about. Also, if the therapist did not use deep pressure on the legs, I would not worry too much. As far as pressure points to induce labor, you would have to apply a good amount of pressure on that one spot and linger there for several minutes for it to even possibly induce labor. Even still, if your body is not preparing to go into labor anyways, it probably won't do anything. As for the massages being different, that makes sense as massage therapists are not robots and we do not all perform swedish massages the same way.
