What is up with everything muslin? Are muslin bibs, blankets, burp cloths, towels, crib sheets, loveys, etc. better than your standard cotton? I mean it's cute and all but why would I pay more for the thinner muslin blanket over the average cotton?
I think it's because the muslin blankets were such a big hit that they decided, hey, why stop there? Let's make everything muslin, and of course, people buy it.
The muslin blankets are really great, so definitely get those. ;-) They are the perfect size and stretchiness for swaddling and can be used as a car seat cover, nursing cover, and other things. The regular flannel receiving blankets are too small.
I only found muslin to be particularly useful for swaddle blankets (the give/stretch in the fabric helped keep it together tightly). Otherwise it's just for looks/feels nice as far as I can tell.
We didn't have anything muslin with DD1. I want to get a Muslin Halo Sleepsack for DD2 since its so much more breathable, and in Florida that is a major plus. Otherwise, it just seems expensive for something I didn't find necessary in the first go-around.
Muslin blankets are awesome. I think we have 11 Aden + Anais ones (dog ate the 12th). Yes they're kind of pricy, but you can get a really good swaddle with them and you can easily layer two together is you think LO will be cold. I felt cotton blankets got kind of stiff and scratchy when I washed them whereas the AA ones get softer. I used mine as swaddles, burp cloths, tummy time mat (dog hair free zone) and now DD1 uses them at night as a light blanket. All the other stuff is completely unnecessary in muslin imo
I've never heard of muslin before. Am I missing out?
Same! At first glance I thought the thread misspelled Muslim lol
At any rate, I feel very out of the loop and pretty lost when people start suggesting all different types of car seats, carriers, strollers, play pens, and now something called muslin. I have my research cut out for me
I loved my Aden and Anais muslin blankets! I didn't have them with my first but used them like crazy with my second. As previous posters have said they stretch nicely (the perfect swaddle!), are a great size, and have multiple uses. They are not an essential item but something that is very nice to have.
I love the Aden & Anais muslin swaddlers! We got such great use out of them for a long time. And it will be so nice in the spring/summer as they are so breathable. The only other muslin thing we have are her sheets (also A&A). They were on sale so I didn't spend a lot on them and they are so soft and cozy. But definitely not a necessity (the swaddlers are IMO though).

Half of the time I fall off because they're brands or products that are not available here. I had never heard of a pack and play before coming to this board. Or the Rock and play I think it's called. I tried looking up what muslin is in Denmark. Apparently it's used for making cheese? I think we will do fine without them lol.
Yeah the Aden and Anais muslin blankets are a MUST. They are just SO soft. I used to do skin to skin constantly with my son during my maternity leave and just cover us with an A&A swaddle... ahh so comfy.

A & A blankets are definitely worth the pretty penny they cost. Go for the $40+ ones, not the "Aden by A&A" ones. They're bigger and softer. All 3 of my kids have their own patterns of them and use them as their loveys. I also got DD2 a dream blanket. Love it as well. As for sleep sacks, we use grobag because our house is old (120+ yrs) and very drafty.
My experience was actually different than most reviews I hear. I think we used our A&A blankets maybe twice. They are HUGE and way more hassle to swaddle than with the smaller cotton or flannel blankets that are way cheaper. Of course I had a small baby (6#3, 19.5") but more than a square yard of fabric was way too much.
I love love love the A&A muslin blankets for swaddling. I've never had any of the other muslin products and actually don't thin I would care for them, but blankets, so nice!
I also liked using the blankets for carseat shades/covers in the spring and summer. They are really thin so baby didn't get too hot but provided some sun/people protection when needed :-)

I absolutely am obsessed with Aden and Anais because of their breathability factor (which worried me until my son got older) and the feel (they become softer with each wash). I usually get mine from Home Goods or TJ Maxx for 50% off!
I forgot to add that I also used A&A swaddles as covers when nursing in public.... not nearly as hot/heavy as some other options!
I made a gauze fabric nursing cover. It was awesome and light, I can send it to you if you want because after a few weeks i just stopped using a cover. And nobody ever noticed or called me out. Lol. I was discreet about it but seriously, those covers are overrated and draw so much more attention. I just always wore a tank under my shirt so I pulled the shirt up and tank down and you couldn't see.

I prefer to cover up in public (or when my father-in-law is around haha), but I did nurse occasionally without a cover because I forgot it. My shirt would pretty much fall over and cover up my boob anyway.
