When should you start packing your hospital bag?

I'm not sure when I should start, 36 weeks today.

  • I would go pack it now... You never know when LO will decide to come or something will happen and you need to deliver early. I went to Pintrest and found good lists. I had mine packed at 37 weeks
  • I've had mine done for a week now with all the essentials... Yay for hotel soaps and shampoos
  • I was told at my 34 week appointment that I should have a bag packed, so I packed it lol. This time around I have everything for me and baby in a small wheelie suitcase.
  • I'm 37w and have had it mostly packed for two weeks. Just don't have tooth brush in there yet but have a travel size tooth paste, deodorant and soap in there
  • I'm 36 weeks and packing it tonight. I would have had it done sooner but I'm lazy and a procrastinator. But, after 8 hours of contractions the other night I decided it was probably time I get it done ... no reason not to. Anything can happen!
  • 35 weeks and I've been slowly putting stuff in over the past week.
  • I'm at the end of my 36 week mark and I finished packing LO's bag this week as well as my own. Mine isn't finished yet though, just have to throw in the last minute necessities (ie toothbrush, hairbrush).
  • Now would be a good time! :)
  • Question for STMs about bring the hospital bag... when went to L&D did you bring all your stuff with you or leave it in the car until you knew you were for sure going to be admitted and have DH go get it? Also I've heard of people packing a smaller labor bag and then a hospital stay bag..they keep the hospital stay bag in the car until you are moved to the recovery room...do you think that's beneficial/helpful or one bag with everything?

I think it depends on how much stuff you bring with you. I have always packed fairly minimally, so I bring all of it in at once as soon as we get there. We didn't have a car when my first was born, so we didn't have another option, and with my 2nd & 3rd, I had a better idea of what I'd need and what I wouldn't use.

For me personally, I don't bother bringing much in the way of clothes...just a going-home outfit & maybe 1 back-up for baby, and about the same for myself. I prefer to stay in the hospital gown while I'm there...less laundry when I get home that way. ;)  I've also never needed shower stuff as hospital showers gross me out...so there isn't much that I bring for the recovery period...mostly snacks. :)

ETA: OP, anytime now is a good time to pack.

  • I've had as much possible packed since 36 weeks. It's better to be safe than sorry! There are still a lot of things you can't pack (things you use every day) and I still need to go shopping for snacks/mints/hard candy.
  • After my preterm labor scare last week at 34 weeks...I packed it that night when we got home from the hospital.  You just never know so it's better to be way early than to scramble the day of.

  • I'm a procrastinator about packing, my doctor said to make sure to do it by 37+0 because about 50% of babies come before their EDD.
  • I'm 38+5 with an induction scheduled on Friday morning and still don't have my bag completely packed. I need to get on it! I only have a few more things to put in there though.
